Reasons to visit Lower Zambezi Park

Canoe Safaris

Canoe Safaris

Canoeing excursions are an exhilarating and unique safari experience in the Lower Zambezi National Park. But they are not for the faint-hearted or the nervous safari visitor! The canoeing takes place in the many tributaries and channels of the Zambezi river with experienced canoeing guides. You can opt to join in the paddling or sit back and let your guide do the work, just drinking in the scene. You glide silently among animals quenching their thirst at the river bank – elephants, buffalo, antelope, perhaps even a predator. The birding is excellent here and the guides know their birds, quietly whispering the name so as not to disturb the serenity of the experience. It is a magical way to spend a morning. But you also encounter hippos … lots of them. Depending on your temperament, this could be either exhilarating or alarming which is why we say that the canoeing may not be right for everyone. Old Mondoro Camp also offers multi-day canoe safaris if you are keen.

Safari Houses of Zambia

Safari Houses of Zambia

Zambia offers a number of safari houses – luxurious self contained homesteads which your group of friends or family party take as one unit. The lodge usually comes with its own ranger so that you have a private vehicle for your game drives and a private chef, sometimes even a house-keeper or butler as well. As you can imagine this leads to a relaxed and flexible safari. Three favorites of ours are Chongwe River House in the Lower Zambezi National Park, Luangwa Safari House on the edge of the South Luangwa National Park and Tangala House near to the magnificent Victoria Falls.

Tiger fishing

Tiger fishing

The Zambezi river offers some of the best tiger fishing in the world on a catch and release basis. A relative of the infamous piranha, tiger fish have large carnivorous teeth and can grow to 15kg. The most sporting and certainly the most fun to catch, the tiger fish are known for their strength and spectacular fighting performance. This is exciting stuff for the keen fisherman and the novice alike – from the moment it strikes and to when you hold it aloft for that classic photo opportunity. If you are keen, you can opt to spend the day on the Zambezi with a fishing guide. However if you just want to try your luck, you can spend just a couple of hours, armed with some drinks and snacks, enjoying the glorious views that the river affords. The camps supply both regular and fly-fishing equipment, plus the boats, fuel and the guides know the best places to lure them onto the hook.
