On Safari in Zambia Home / Zambia / Kafue

Kafue Safari from Livingstone to Lusaka | Zambia | Kafue

Kafue National Park is the third largest national park in Africa at 22 500 sq. km. Yet, despite its beauty and diversity, Kafue’s comparative inaccessibility means it remains gloriously untamed! A unique range of habitats, from the memorable Busanga floodplains in the far northwest to the verdant vegetation of the Lunga River, supports a rewarding variety of wildlife. Kafue is also a birder's paradise with over 400 species. Great combination with Victoria Falls, South Luangwa or Lower Zambezi.

Day 1 : Depart Livingstone for Lunga River Lodge
Fly from Llivingstone to Lunga River Lodge, arriving in time for an afternoon game activity. The Busanga Plains cover an area of approximately 750 sq km and are skirted by the Lunga River on their eastern side. This perennial river is one of the three main tributaries into the Busanga Plains. Situated on the banks of this magnificent river is Lunga River Lodge. Lunga River Lodge has six spacious thatched rooms with private decks that overlook the river, ensuring breathtaking views. A maximum of 12 guests can be accommodated at any one time and great emphasis has been placed on the 'guided' experience - being led by qualified, enthusiastic people with in-depth knowledge of the area and its wildlife. Activities include game drives, walking safaris, guided canoe and boating trips as well as fishing. Night drives provide the added excitement of the nocturnal wonders of the area.

Day 2 : Busanga Floodplains
This morning you enjoy a game-viewing transfer into the seasonally flooded Busanga floodplains. Busanga Plains is one of Zambia's most significant wetland areas and one of the few areas in the world untouched by human development and human activity. The plains are home to thousands of red lechwe, ubiquitous puku, stately roan and sable as well as the diminutive oribi and duiker. The Defassa waterbuck, herds of tsessebe, hartebeest, zebra and buffalo make for a full set of antelope. This wealth of game on the plains is also a big attraction for predators, including leopards, wild dogs, cheetah and prides of lion up to 20 strong.

Busanga Bush Camp in the north-western section of the Busanga is about as 'wild' as you can get in today's world: an unfenced mosaic of expansive grassy seasonal floodplains and "dambos" (open grassy areas that sometimes will fill up with rainwater). This camp is perfectly situated for some of the best lion viewing in Africa. It caters for 6 guests in 3 well-appointed tents with wall-to-wall views of the spectacular wildlife that frequents the plain in front of the camp. Activities include game drives, walking safaris and night drives, led by qualified guides who are extremely knowledgeable about the area and its wildlife.

Day 4 : Lunga River Lodge
This morning you have a game-viewing transfer back to Lunga River Lodge. A unique range of habitats, from the memorable Busanga floodplains in the northwest to the verdant vegetation of the south, supports a rewarding variety of wildlife. It is a birder?s paradise with over 490 species, including endemics such as Chaplin's Barbet.

Day 5 : Return to Lusaka
After a final early morning game activity, you fly back to Lusaka. Alternatively there are private charter flights to Livingstone or straight to Jeki (Lower Zambezi) at an extra cost.
