Set in the historic heart of this pretty town, Andries Stockenstrom is a culinary oasis in the vast Karoo. Food is a passion for Beatrice and her dinners may well be the highlight of your stay. Graaff-Reinet in the Great Karoo, with its dramatic landscape and huge skies, appeals to those of our visitors who enjoy getting off the beaten track. This fascinating old town with its superb architecture and quirky museums has been described as a 'living monument'. From your base in Graaff Reinet you can view game in the Karoo nature reserve. Lastly, the Valley of Desolation must be one of the most awe-inspiring sights in Southern Africa. (3½ hours, 305km drive)

Day 3 : 2 nights, Elephant House, Near Addo Elephant Park, Bed & Breakfast Travel to the Addo region for two nights at the Elephant House, a small exclusive lodge only minutes away from the Addo Elephant Park in the Sundays River Valley. Elephant House oozes character: deep verandas furnished with antiques; Persian carpets and a fascinating collection of Africana art. Surrounded by rolling lawns and indigenous trees, this is the perfect place to return to after a hot day in the bush. Addo Elephant Park is great for a low-key spot of game viewing at a waterhole to see what comes along. It is home to the densest population of elephant as well as black rhino, buffalo and various antelope species too. Game drives into Shamwari, Schotia and Kariega are also a possibility. Alternative accommodation would be at Woodall Farm nearby. (2½ hours, 245km drive)
