Mashatu 3 night 4 day Walking Safaris | Botswana | Mashatu Game Reserve |
The land of the giants offers an African walking safari like none other. Witness the habits of the wild animals of Africa; learn about the hidden secrets of nature; find the smaller creatures concealed in their bush homes; see how the eco-system involves the interactions of species; and track down an animal by following its footprints. Experience the sounds of the nocturnal creatures of the African bush in rustic wilderness camps. Take part in story telling around the camp fire at night and share your bush experiences with fellow hikers on the trip. Enjoy a delicious meal after a day filled with adventure before falling into bed in anticipation of the next adventurous day.
Satellite camp sites are set up in specific locations throughout the Mashatu wilderness. Accommodation is in dome tents (or under the stars for the more adventurous) on comfortable stretchers. Facilities include a bucket shower, and bush-WC (not complete without spade) - most importantly enjoy every amenity afforded by Mother Nature!
The Kgotla is an old tribal court, relocated to Mashatu and now used as a wilderness camp. It is built from leadwood poles in the sandstone formations of the Limpopo basin and is equipped with running water ablutions and hot showers. The Kgotla provides an exciting night out.

Day 1 : Greeting & Short walk On your arrival you will be met at either Pont Drift border post or Limpopo Valley Airfield by a camp representative. Pick up time at the border post is 12 noon, should you not make this pick up time please advise the Mashatu headquarters. After a cool refreshment it?s walking shoes on and the safari begins on foot into the eastern part of Mashatu where the first night will be spent at the 1st wilderness camp. After a light lunch the afternoon will be spent with a short walk around the area, here you will be accompanied by the Paul. He will be able to assist with plenty of interesting information on the wildlife and terrain of Mashatu. Fresh spoor can be followed with a good chance of finding what you were looking for! The late afternoon will end with sundowners under a brilliant African sky.
Once back at the wilderness camp and around the log fire, dinner is prepared and interesting stories told of what the next 4 days will entail. The evening will close on stretcher beds staring up at the stars.

Day 2 : Walking through the African bush Early wake up call followed by coffee or tea heralds the start of your walking safari in the ?Land of the Giants?. Today you will have the opportunity of walking through the African bush and learning about the many fascinating plants and animals with which we share our world. Breakfast & lunch (carried in backpacks) will be enjoyed during the day and a small siesta under a shaded tree. The end of the day will be greeted by a new wilderness camp with a welcome bucket shower and some well-deserved red wine and story swapping around the fire. It is expected that the sounds of lion, hyena, leopard, jackal and other less intimidating creatures of the night will interrupt your sleep.
|
Day 3 : Learn the art of tracking Early to bed early to rise !! Mashatu is home to no less than 7 of Africa?s Giants: African elephant, lion, giraffe, boabab tree, eland, ostrich and kori bustard. The reserve offers some of the most exhilarating game viewing in Africa and proudly offers refuge for the largest single population of elephant on privately owned land in Africa. Some 350 species of birds may be seen. Become one with the bush, identify and age various spoor. Learn the art of tracking and perhaps chancing on one of your ?quarry?. Enjoy the evening with tales of what has been seen and drift off to sleep with noises of the bush.
Another possibility is to walk out for the whole day and being picked up by a vehicle at a certain spot, having a game drive back to camp at an additional cost of US$35-00.
