On Safari in Tanzania Home / Tanzania / Western National Parks

Greystoke Mahale Fly-In | Tanzania | Western National Parks

Mahale Mountains National Park is 1,613 sq km of wilderness and rainforest on the shores of Lake Tanganyika in Western Tanzania. This safari features an informally luxurious retreat in the sanctuary of the remote Mahale National Park, home to the world's largest chimpanzee population. The Mahale Mountains rise behind Greystoke Camp, which fronts the clear waters of the lake. Seventy chimps live in the mountains within hiking distance of the camp, and have become habituated to human presence over two decades. Every day you can trek in the tropical rainforest to observe our closest relatives as they groom, wrestle and forage across the leafy floor.

Notes
Day 1 : 4 nights Greystoke Camp.
Fly from Arusha to Mahale, then transfer by sailing dhow to Greystoke Camp, a suitably romantic introduction to a bewitching place. Snorkelling, fishing, swimming, and sundowners on the dhow are all part of the afternoon activities, following a few hours trekking the chimpanzees through the rainforest in the cool of the day. Seventy chimps live in the mountains close to camp, and have become habituated to human presence over two decades. The mess, with its lounging cushions, rare books and specialist primate library, has decks that look out to every point of the compass. Guest rooms are simple but luxuriously so, with en suite bucket showers and all the necessities for a relaxing stay.

Day 5 : Return to Arusha.
Light Aircraft charter flight back to Arusha for onward arrangements.
