Swaziland

Game-viewing in the scenic Mkhaya and Mlilwane reserves.

Sunset drinks at Mlilwane Game Reserve (Reilly's Rock Lodge)

The Kingdom of Swaziland, to the south of the Kruger, provides a fascinating cultural and wildlife experience; a beautiful, peaceful and relatively prosperous African country. Travel through undulating country dotted with Swazi villages and enjoy game viewing in the scenic Mkhaya and Mlilwane reserves.

The Swazis have a well-developed sense of their own culture and are open-minded and friendly in their outlook. They are renowned craftsmen, and you can buy terrific examples of basket ware, colourful fabrics, carvings, and Mother of Pearl in friendly markets and roadside stalls.

Swaziland is a small country with several ecological zones from rainforest in the northwest to savannah grassland in the dry eastern parts. The western edge of the Swaziland kingdom is heavily forested with deep gorges, lush valleys and fast flowing rivers and waterfalls. From Mbabane, you descend to the grassland plateau containing many tropical fruit farms, where the majority of people live.

White-water rafting is on offer for the adventurous whilst others will prefer a mellow round of golf, mountain biking, game-viewing or a gentle horse ride through the Mlilwane Game Reserve. We recommend a two night stay in Swaziland as the driving is fairly slow and so an overnight stay doesn’t give you much time to relax. Most of our clients stay at one of the lodges in the Ezulwini valley. We recommend Reilly’s Rock Lodge, with its sense of history and tranquil ambience, or perhaps the Royal Swazi Hotel if you prefer more of a a resort feel…
