Franschhoek, Winelands, South Africa
Luxury Franschhoek Hotels & Attractions

The picturesque village of Franschhoek is brimming with ‘joie de vivre’ and rural charm. It’s full of gourmet restaurants and eclectic shops in a pretty valley setting surrounded by mountains. The origins of Franschhoek date back to 1688 when some of the French Huguenots fleeing religious persecution settled in the valley, then known as Elephants Corner. As the settlers increased, it became known as French Corner, or 'Franschhoek' in Afrikaans. The French influence is evident today in the ancient wine estates with their French names, such as Mont Rochelle, Haute Cabriere or Les Omarins, and in the number of excellent award-winning restaurants. Franschhoek offers a number of interesting shops, art galleries, antique dealers and African craft shops, and it is an especially good place to stock up on 'foodie' delights from the many delis.
You can opt to stay in the village, which is great if you like browsing through shops and stalls, or just ouside on one of the many wine estates of Franshhoek. Some of our favourite Franschhoek hotels include Le Quartier francais in the village, or Klein Genot Country Estate and Mont Rochelle just outside Franschhoek.
