To the north of Johannesburg and Pretoria lies a number of malaria-free wildlife sanctuaries, the Pilanesberg, Waterberg and Madikwe game reserves amidst wide open plains of bushveld stretching all the way to the Limpopo river. Rising out of these plains is the ancient volcano ridge of the Pilanesberg (1½ to 2 hours drive from Johannesburg) which encircles Sun City and beyond to the far north-west lies Madikwe Game Reserve (4 hours drive from Johannesburg).
Madikwe is the foremost malaria-free game reserve in South Africa offering a superb range of wildlife including the Big Five of elephant, rhino, lion, leopard and buffalo. Thus if you dont mind the relative inaccessibility, which can also be seen as an attraction, we recommend Madikwe. Pilanesberg is more convenient for Johannesburg and therefore busier and more developed especially in the southern parts of the reserve. However some Pilanesberg lodges are more secluded. Pilanesberg Game Reserve can also be combined with the razzle and dazzle of Sun City with its family-friendly activities and watersports.
