White Elephant Safari Lodge is an elegant, colonial lodge in the beautiful Pongola game reserve which lies at the foot of the majestic Lebombo Mountains in the far northern part of KwaZulu Natal. White Elephant Safari Lodge and the Pongola Game Reserve has a stunning setting, overlooking the shimmering waters of Lake Jozini, Exactly 100 years ago after the last sighting of elephant in the Pongola area, two breeding herds of elephant were reintroduced ten years ago. Now you encounter not only thriving herds of elephant but also a variety of antelope, wildebeest, zebra, giraffe and hyena.
White Elephant Safari Lodge is a romantic evocative retreat which makes an ideal relaxing game and nature experience especially if you are travelling onto the Kruger National Park. The 1920's homestead is exquisitely furnished with antiques. Outside is a lovely rim pool with sun loungers on the wooden pool deck. Paths lead to eight luxury tents, each thoughtfully decorated with crisp white linen, teak furniture, ceiling fan, dressing table and day beds on the deck. The bathroom has a double basin, and a ball and claw bath in front of huge French windows which can be drawn back to give the sensation of bathing in the open air.
What we like about White Elephant Safari Lodge and the Pongola Game Reserve is the variety of activities on offer - not just open top 4x4 game drives, but bush walks, sunset boat cruises, Tiger fishing (for novices or the experienced), and the chance to join the acclaimed 'Space for Elephants' elephant monitoring programme.
White Elephant Safari Lodge can be easily combined with the beach lodges of coastal Maputaland only 2 hours away or you may like to spend two nights on safari here and two nights on safari at either Phinda or Thanda to the south as the safari experience is so different. In the Pongola reserve, you are not focused on ticking off animals but rather on having a holistic safari.
