Phinda Game Reserve, which means 'the return', is a 15,000ha private game reserve to the north of Hluhluwe and the St Lucia wetlands. Phinda offers a winning combination of soft adventure, thrilling game-viewing and inspired lodge design. Rich both in game and in stunning scenery, Phinda Game Reserve boasts the diversity of seven contrasting ecosystems, including sand forest, mountain bushveld and wetlands. This diversity of habitat naturally attracts a variety of game including lion, elephant, cheetah, leopard and an abundance of general game. The territorial white rhino favour waterholes and wallows. Herds of elephant and buffalo move throughout the reserve and are easily spotted.
Phinda Vlei Lodge is one of the most luxurious lodges at Phinda and is suitable sybaritic in feel. It retains the slight Eastern feel to the décor with uncluttered furnishings, much use of wooden shutters and expansive open areas in the public areas and suites. The six suites have separate sitting room, large bedroom with glass walls overlooking a private deck with views to the vlei beyond. Here it is perfectly possible for you to watch the animals congregating at the water whilst relaxing in your private plunge pool! The bathroom is delicious with double shower, large bath and vanity unit. Phinda Vlei is situated in the rare dry sand Forest which is home to the shy suni and red duiker. As one of the more luxurious of Phinda's lodges, Vlei Lodge has the most experienced rangers and trackers, and its small size ensures intimacy and exclusivity. Meals are served in the stylish dining area, or in a spectacular bush setting under a starlit sky. Phinda is particularly known for its Pan-African cuisine and bush dinners in romantic settings.
Phinda Game Reserve is particularly known for its good cheetah sightings, and its prolific bird life (with approx 380 species recorded). Rudd's apalis, Neergaard's sunbird and pink-throated twinspot are endemic to the Maputaland region. Guests can enjoy twice-daily game drives, nature walks, river cruises and canoeing on the Mzizene at no extra cost. Given the reserve's proximity to the Indian Ocean, Phinda is able to offer optional extras such as coastal flights, beach excursions and scuba diving and deep sea fishing for an additional fee.
