Phinda Rock Lodge lies within Phinda Game Reserve, a 15,000ha private game reserve to the north of Hluhluwe and the St Lucia wetlands. Phinda offers a winning combination of soft adventure, thrilling game-viewing and inspired lodge design. Rich both in game and in stunning scenery, Phinda Game Reserve boasts the diversity of seven contrasting ecosystems, including sand forest, mountain bushveld and wetlands. This diversity of habitat naturally attracts a variety of game including lion, elephant, cheetah, leopard, rhino, hippo and an abundance of general game. Phinda is particularly known for good cheetah sightings, and its prolific bird life (with over 400 species recorded). Guests can enjoy game drives, nature walks, river cruises and canoeing on the Mzizene, and community visits.
Phinda reserve also offers specialist safaris on leopard research, birding, rhino-darting and bush skills as well as an exhilarating overnight walking safaris using comfortable spacious en suite tents. Given the reserve's proximity to the Indian Ocean, Phinda is able to offer optional extras such as coastal flights, beach excursions and snorkeling.
Phinda Rock Lodge is uniquely built into the cliff face of a rocky outcrop and offers sweeping views across the coastal plains. It is my personal favourite. It has an open, relaxed and understated feel to it, which exudes cosmopolitan style whilst simultaneously staying very much in tune with the bush. The six suites are extremely spacious with a fluid organic feel - a small indoor sitting area leads to a bedroom with glorious open views of the bushveld below and the Lebombo mountains, which in turn leads to a spacious bathroom with sunken bath, indoor shower and one of the nicest outdoor showers to be had. Each suite has its own private plunge pool, where you feel almost suspended in air over the deep valley below. As one of the more luxurious of Phinda's lodges, Rock Lodge has the most experienced rangers and trackers. The lodge has a vibey feel to it with an attentive and friendly staff complement.
Meals are served in warm evocative dining room, on the game-viewing deck or in a spectacular bush setting under a starlit sky. Phinda is particularly known for its Pan-African cuisine and bush dinners in surprising settings. Honeymooners can also enjoy a private dinner in their suite.
