Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse, in the Drakensberg mountains, is a luxury gourmet retreat tucked deep into the mountains beside a beautiful dam. It lies not far from Giants Castle and Kamberg Nature Reserves with their famous San (Bushmen) Rock Art and is surrounded by walking country. However it is for Richard’s legendary ‘foodie’ dinners, and breakfast, that Cleopatra is most well-known. Excitingly different, Richard offers fine gourmet food using local ingredients and home-grown herbs. He’s recently written a cookery book outlining some of his signature dishes and elaborate, multi-course dinners are the order of the day. You’ll need a hike or two to walk off the glorious food on offer! Dining takes place is a charming atmospheric dining room which is cantilevered over a crystal clear dam.

Richard’s wife, Mouse, has filled the lodge with many artefacts to interest and amuse. The five rooms and four suites are quirky and welcoming, with many personal touches. All have television, separate showers, crisp cotton sheets, mohair blankets and heated underblankets. Please note that the eclectic, slightly eccentric decor will not suit those who prefer a more minimalist, refined style. Activities from Cleopatra include walking, visiting the nearby San rock art, horse riding, birding and trout fishing in nearby dams and rivers.
