The Marine Hotel has been an icon in Hermanus for as long as anyone can remember, with a stunning cliff top setting overlooking the beautiful Walker bay. A path leads down to the crashing waves and the hotel's private tidal pool whilst it's an easy two- minute walk to Hermanus market square in the other direction. Though a luxurious five star hotel, The Marine has relaxed contemporary décor, with much use of light and bright colours in the 43 bedrooms and suites. All bedrooms have private bathrooms, remote controlled colour television, telephone, electronic safe and underfloor heating. Views are either to the sea, the courtyard or the mountains. A sophisticated cocktail bar and a lounge offers wonderful sea views. Seafood Express is a seafood deli offering light meals throughout the day.

The Marine has two restaurants; Seafood at the Marine is a vibrant contemporary restaurant with the emphasis on the freshness of the fish from Hermanus' Walker Bay, great style and friendly service. The open kitchen provides diners with a close-up view of the frenetic activity. The Pavilion is relaxed, but with an understated elegance. The décor is fresh and sophisticated, and the view of the sea is exceptional. It focuses on haute cuisine with hints of the Mediterranean and the East.

Other facilities at the hotel include a heated courtyard pool, the Carchele Spa (offering a range of treatments including vichy showers, hydrotherapy treatment and steam room); the Internet lounge and the Sun lounge with nothing between you and the South Pole, other than 3,000 miles of ocean.

Hermanus offers some of the best land-based whale watching in the world and at The Marine you may not even have to get out of bed to view these amazing creatures (July to December). The Marine has direct access to a tidal pool, where you can swim as close to 100m away from the whales. The Hotel can supply you with towels and a packed picnic hamper. Alternatively enjoy the coastal trail which snakes through pristine fynbos for several kilometres offering great sea views and whale-watching in season.
