Klaserie Walking Safari

Greater Kruger Park, South Africa

  • Prices from $612.00
  • 3 nights

Day 1

Arrive at Meeting Point and transfer to Camp

You meet at a lovely bush pub on the edge of the Greater Kruger Park at midday where 4x4 landrovers take you to one of the two exclusive tented camps where you stay for the next three nights. This afternoon you enjoy a short orientation walk where you get the feel of the walking safari and are introduced to your guides and to the rest of the group.

You stay in one of two modest tented camps:

Tusker Tented Camp - is situated amongst lush riverine forest on the banks of the Klaserie River in the Klaserie Private Nature Reserve. Its name refers to the elephant’s tusks, this camp often receives visits from Africa’s largest land mammal.

Madach Tented Camp – is situated in the Timbavati Private Game Reserve. The name Madach means “Wild Dog” in Shangaan and it was given to this lovely camp when a pack of Africa’s second most endangered large carnivore moved through the area when building the camp. Situated on a small riverbed and surrounded by Mopane, Acacia and Leadwood trees, this camp and its surroundings give you that true African feeling.

Each camp can sleep up to 12 people in large walk-in twin-bedded tents (linen and towels are provided) with sown-in mosquito screens. Ablutions are separate but close with hot showers and flush toilets. Although there is no electricity in the camps, there is solar lighting, candles, lanterns and a campfire to guide you around the camp at night. Meals are prepared in the kitchen tent and served in the dining tent. Each safari is accompanied by one or two experienced and armed guides, depending on the group size, and each camp is serviced by a chef and camp attendant.

Day 2 and 3

Walking Safaris

Day 2 and 3

A walking safari affords you the ultimate, close-to-the-wild experience, and a chance to focus on the smaller bush inhabitants including birds, insects and butterflies. You can also discover the interesting worlds of trees, grasses, flowers, geology and ecology - of course, occasionally big game can be seen on walks - including rhino, buffalo and lion.

After early morning tea, you enjoy your first walking safari. This can be up to four hour in length. Depending on weather and animal movements, you may also enjoy game drives in open 4x4 landrovers but the focus of the safari is walking on foot. The hotter part of the day is spent relaxing around the camp, perhaps enjoying an afternoon siesta. Another walking safari takes place in the late afternoon and sometimes continues after nightfall as a game drive in the 4x4 landrovers.

Fitness
Although there is no maximum age, the walks can last up to 4 hours and tracking might lead the trail through thick bush, riverbeds and gullies. Therefore an average fitness level is required, especially in the hotter summer months

Optional Sleep-Out
If you are keen, there may be an option of an exciting sleep-out in the bush. This is entirely optional but is often the highlight for many guests.
