Roggeland Country House, Paarl 3*

A good rustic farmhouse atmosphere. This included swallows nesting in the reception area and continuously flying through the open door to feeding their young (not so good photo). There was a kitchen garden and good sized grounds to walk in. Our room and bathroom were spacious and reflected the farmhouse style of the main building. No TV, but that was of no concern. We enjoyed the opportunity to meet with other guests for drinks before dinner. We had an excellent meal with wine (included) and there was a good pool to relax in if needed.
La Plume, Oudtshoorn 3*

Fantastic room and en suite, but strangely not all in good working order. We had a very good evening meal, best taken as the site is some way from town, as well as breakfast. Great views of working ostrich farms from the balcony area and a good range of birdlife in the trees. Enjoyed the stay.

What can I add to last year's comments. We just loved it. Fabulous hosts and amazing views from first rate accommodation in a separate unit. Even a fire for us at night in our room. Wonderful views down on to the estuary and great bird life. Excellent breakfasts and very reasonably priced evening meals. Clearly a favourite venue for locals as well as guests. Road access had been improved. The site and accommodation are just great.
Kate's report 5*

Les Cascades offers excellent accommodation in a stunning setting at a value-for-money price. It is located right at the top of Bantry Bay heading towards Clifton. You can even walk to Clifton Beach from here (10 to 15mins) though it’s uphill on the way back so most people catch a taxi ! The setting is reminiscent of the Italian Riviera – very glamorous with houses perched on the mountainside. The lodge is on several (5 or 6) levels, though you can access it from the bottom or the top, so it's NOT suitable for frail people. Each room has a seaview. They accept children and place them on the floor which is closest to the pool. These 2 (family) rooms have an alcove area where they can put an extra bed. They also have steps from their private balconies down to the pool so that children don’t need to come into the house with wet towels. There is an open plan sitting room and outdoor eating area under a pergola. They do meals every evening but alternate between a light supper and a proper dinner. One level down from the top swimming pool you come to the Villa with more rooms. The villa has a large open plan sitting/dining area and this is where meals for all rooms are served in the winter. Recommended for all, except people who can't manage stairs very well.
Kate's report on Emily Moon River Lodge 4*
By Kate Added: 17 October 2007
"The new owners have changed and improved the look of the lodge extensively within the outline of the existing buildings and built two new chalets as well.
They now have a vibrant and acclaimed restaurant which is a very welcome addition. It takes outside diners (though Emily Moon's guests have first right of refusal). I really liked the decor changes and particularly loved the ancient carved wooden doorways and doors. Mallard River now has one family unit with a second en suite bedroom below the main bedroom so that two children of any age (older as well) can be accommodated in comfort."
Mrs Orchard's comments 4*

Loved this place. What a superb choice for our first 4 nights. Els made an extremely thoughtful hostess and helped make our twins' 21st birthday a really memorable occasion. The food was excellent and they also gave us 2 very good restaurant reservations, first Manolo's but more particularly Ginja's. I would love to go back sometime.
