Garden Route, South Africa

The Garden Route and Little Karoo thoroughly deserves its reputation for enchanting beauty. The Garden Route, between Mossel Bay and the Storms River, offers a spectacular coastline of dramatic headlands giving way to white sandy beaches. Behind the sand dunes lie placid lagoons and wetland lakes, with a hinterland of soaring mountains, covered by indigenous rainforest, magnificent twisting passes, waterfalls and wooded ravines.

The Garden Route is perfect for those wanting to relax in beautiful surroundings and for those wishing to be more active. There are walking and hiking trails by the lakes, along the coast and in the mountains. Adrenalin-junkies are spoilt for choice with bungee jumping, bridge swinging, blackwater tubing, abseiling and cage diving amongst Great White sharks. Horse-riding, canoeing, mountain biking and excellent golfing are readily arranged.

We recommend a visit of several days during the summer and autumn months (November through to May), as there is so much to enjoy in the glorious sunshine. You may like to base yourself at two different spots, perhaps one on the western side (Wilderness or Oudtshoorn) and one on the eastern side (Plettenberg Bay or the Tsitsikamma) so that you dont need to redo your steps. From the Garden Route, its but an easy drive to the malaria-free game reserves of the Eastern Cape which makes for a great way to end a Garden Route holiday. But in winter and spring, bear in mind that the lush vegetation of the Garden Route is explained by the higher rainfall of the region!
