Bayethe Tented Lodge by Kate 5*

Bayethe is our favourite amongst the less expensive Shamwari lodges as it has the most character. Its only disadvantage is that you have to travel a small section (10 mins) of public road to get to the main southern part of the reserve. Now however Shamwari have purchased a piece of land to the north of Bayethe so if you are heading to the northern part of the reserve you’ll be in the reserve straight from the lodge, (however they will still use the road as a short cut to the southern part). The Bayethe tents were looking very pleasant with a plunge pool and outdoor shower on their deck and the bedroom facing the views to the front, decorated in autumnal colours of red/orange/beige. Behind the bedhead is the large bathroom with bath and ingenious indoor shower disguised, (rather effectivey I might say), as a tree stump!

The main lodge has concertina glass doors across the whole front [art so that in summer, the lodge can be completely opened to enjoy the sunshine and bush views and fully enclosed on those chilly winter mornings. There’s also a charming little bar/private dining area at the water’s edge for private honeymoon dining or as a private massage tsala.

However the big news is that you should try to find a little extra to treat yourselves to the new Bayethe Hills tents. This is not a separate lodge, despite the name, but three luxurious tents. For not very much more you are getting a very superior accommodation experience, almost on a par with Eagles Crag. The tents are huge, mini suites in fact, and look like chalets rather than traditional tents. They are decorated in a contemporary style in soft greens with bedroom, sitting area, open plan bathroom (slightly round the corner so its not in your face), enclosed toilet, dressing area, outdoor shower, deck and plunge pool. They also have flat screen TVs. Highly recommended!

Along with Bushmans River Lodge, Bayethe Tented Lodge is one of my favourite Shamwari lodges.  I like the tented style accommodation  at Bayethe.

The advantage of Bayethe is that, even though it is further away from the heart of the game reserve, there are two roads into the game reserve. If the game viewing is good in the northern part of the Shamwari Reserve you would take the northern approach road and get to a sighting more quickly than if staying at one of the southern lodges. However their other approach road leads directly to the southern part of the reserve for southern sightings.

No major changes at Bayethe – they have a Bush Spa and the superior suites ( with satellite TV) are beautiful, contemporary and larger.  No main swimming pool as all the suites have plunge pools (with jets in the pools at the superior suites).  I recommend Tent  12 (superior tent) as the most romantic for honeymoon couples.
