Shamwari was the original malaria-free game reserve in the Eastern Cape and remains at the forefront of conservation in the Eastern Cape area. One of Shamwari's strengths is that it lies at the convergence of five ecosystems and this diversity supports the Big Five (elephant, lion, leopard, rhino, buffalo) as well as varied antelope and a rich birdlife. This beautiful 20,000ha malaria-free reserve is situated in the verdant bush along the Bushmans River, between Port Elizabeth and Grahamstown. Luxury accommodation is offered six game lodges on the reserve, quite diverse in their appearance. Over the years, Shamwari has won many awards including the World's Leading Conservation Company and Game Reserve.

Shamwari's Bayethe Tented Lodge is a luxury tented lodge of twelve suites. 'By-ye-ti' is the welcoming greeting you will receive on your arrival at this splendid stone-walled and thatched lodge. In our opinion, Bayethe is one of the nicest lodges in Shamwari, (alongside the more expensive Eagle's Crag Lodge), as it has a true authentic bush feel and yet is still luxurious. Each of the twin-bedded tented suites is nestled along the bed of the river, camouflaged under trees allowing ample privacy and unsurpassed comforts. Each tented suite is air-conditioned with en-suite bathroom, outdoor shower, private plunge pool and viewing deck. Bayethe's attractive main lodge of stone and thatch has massive glass walls which can be folded back to open the lodge to the bush, or closed in the chilly winter evenings. There's a delightful little thatched bar set right on the edge of a dam, perfect for lunchtime drinks or even relaxing during the quiet hours of the afternoon. Early morning and evening game viewing drives in open land rovers as well as guided nature walks and bird watching are all part of this magnificent Shamwari experience.

Why not treat yourself to one of the three new superior suites at Bayethe which are an avant-garde masterpiece of canvas and stone. Decorated in a striking contemporary style, they are nevertheless soft and inviting and offer the latest in tented luxury. A spacious bedroom area leads to a sitting area and doors out to a wooden deck with private plunge pool. An open plan bathroom is off to one side with enclosed toilet. Shamwari is at the forefront of sustainable eco-tourism. Conservation at Shamwari is about the development, management and rehabilitation of the Eastern Cape bushveld to create a sustainable eco-system through the ongoing implementation of conservation principals. Their wildlife department includes a breeding centre, an education centre and a team of ecologists, enviromentalists and game-management experts.

Please note: Bayethe Tented Lodge is located slightly away from the main part of the Shamwari Game Reserve on its own concession area and so you do have to drive a little further to get to the main part of the reserve when on your game drives.
