Camp Figtree is a remote, private lodge on top of the stunning Zuurberg Mountain range, bordering the greater Addo Elephant National Park. The camp boasts breathtaking 270-degree views over the verdant forested countryside towards the Indian Ocean. Camp Figtree has been designed around its original 1920's traditional colonial homestead. This means the distinctive use of corrugated iron roofs and wide sweeping verandas which provide areas for relaxed sociability. The lounge and dining room are intoxicatingly evocative of the romantic colonial era. Gourmet dinners are served every evening either in their unique boma with a roaring fire or in the homestead.
Four luxury suites offer old world elegance, exclusivity and privacy each with its own private veranda. New additions are the new luxury en suite tents with breathtaking views of an unspoilt valley. Two of the rooms are family rooms with a children's annexe with a bunk bed sleeping two children and plenty of cupboard space, ideal for a family on the move. For the young Camp Figtree offers their 'Bush Supermarket' programme.
Safaris into the River Bend conservancy are conducted by professional game rangers and trackers. From an open Land Rover you are likely to see wildlife such as kudu, bushbuck, leopard, caracal, bush pig and jackal. Additionally, a trip into the neighbouring Addo National Park, a mere 20 minutes away, offers you outstanding opportunities for viewing large herds of elephant amongst other game.
Enjoy the thrill of a walking safari in some of the most diverse terrain in South Africa. In addition to game drives, you can savour a picnic - outdoor, colonial-style, or enjoy an historical tour of the famous Sundays River Valley or take part in a guided horseback safari within the Addo Elephant National Park. For the brave, try Elephant Back Safaris or a gentle walk with these wonderful creatures.
At Camp Figtree their astronomer in attendance can present a riveting open-air lecture on the fascinating world of astronomy. During the lecture colour images produced with the aid of the worlds most powerful telescopes will introduce visitors to the hidden secrets and awesome beauty of the galaxy we call home, and the universe beyond. Topics like the Big Bang, the speed of light, the size of the Universe, and the birth and death of stars, and the nature and formation of black holes are dealt with. The highlight of the evening is the rare opportunity to peer through a powerful telescope at the hidden structures of the Universe, too faint to observe with the unaided eye.
