Cedarberg Mountains, Cedarberg, South Africa

Enjoy hiking, wine-tasting, donkey cart trails and scenic drives in the Cedarberg Wilderness Reserve

Groot Krakadouw pass trail

The 100km Cedarberg mountain range consists of Table Mountain Sandstone, richly coloured by iron oxides and eroded into curious shapes such as the well-known Wolfberg Arch, Stadsaal caves and the dramatic Maltese Cross. The Cedarberg rises majestically above the vineyards and citrus groves of the Oliphants River valley.

In 1488, when Batholomeu Dias first saw the Cedarberg Mountains, he called it the "Sierra dos Reis" (meaning the mountains of the three wise men from the East), presumably because of the three peaks of Sneeuberg, Sneeukop and Tafelberg. Most of the Cedarberg is part of the official Cederberg Wilderness Reserve and thus remains one of the most pristine areas of South Africa. Ancient mountain trails take you through pristine fynbos including as the rare Snow Protea and Clanwilliam pincushion and past curious rock formations. Simple self-catering accommodation is available. However just outside the Cederberg wilderness reserve there are a number of country lodges.  We offer the Cederberg Heritage Route as a great way to enjoy the Cedarberg – guided walking trails staying at unspoilt mission villages.

Some of the delights of the Cedarberg mountains include:

• Pristine wilderness experience
• Plenty of well maintained walking trails
• Stadsaal Caves with their amazing rock formations
• San rock art at Stadsaal and Sevilla Rock Art trail
• Scenic mountain drives
• Cederberg Heritage Route – semi-guided 3 to 5 night walking trails
• Excellent wine-tasting at Cederberg Cellars
• Swimming in natural rockpools at Algeria Forest Station
