A boat trip away from Praslin are the islands of Curieuse, Cousin, Aride and La Digue. Aride, off its north-west, is a world-class bird sanctuary.
La Digue boasts some of the world’s most stunning and most photogenic beaches complete with sculptural granite boulders and tropical palms at the water’s edge. Bicycles frequent the dusty roads and ox carts and picturesque plantation houses are glimpsed through lush foliage. Accessible by boat (30 minutes from Praslin) or by helicopter, it is easily visited for the day. Inland the woods are full of rare and exotic plants and the island is the only nesting place of the rare Black Paradise Flycatcher
There are also a number of smaller away-from-it-all island retreats, including Frégate, Denis, Bird and North Island. Some of these had formerly been cultivated as plantations but are now the sites for small luxury lodges so that indigenous vegetation is being rehabilitated where coconuts and cabbages once grew.
North-west of Mahé is the third largest island of the Seychelles, the virtually undeveloped Silhouette island. Until recently, Silhouette was home to under 200 residents and had only one hotel and no roads. Perfect for nature lovers and hikers, it still has no roads but it does now boast a very smart new luxury resort.
