Desroches & Outer Islands, Seychelles

Lagoons, coral cays, emerald green atolls and sandbanks

The islands that make up the Seychelles are widely flung across the Indian Ocean, some being far closer to Madagascar than to Mah, the capital. The mostly coralline "Outer Islands" are formed of islands groups known as Amirantes, Alphonse, Farquhar and Aldabra.

The best known of these are Desroches, in the Amirantes, and Alphonse. Desroches is the closest to Mah,230km to the south-west, and reached only by air. This tiny island, with its singlelodge, has great beaches and a large shallow lagoon and it isa mecca forscuba divers. Alphonseislandtoo has a huge lagoon, dotted with coral heads. This island attracts keen sports-fishers, especially for bone-fishing. Remote Aldabra is one of few remaining sanctuaries for the giant land tortoise.
