Northern Cape Home / South Africa / Northern Cape
The Kalahari in the Northern Cape, with its raw grandeur, is one of the last true wilderness areas of Southern Africa, a secret land far to the north of the more cultivated Cape.

The vast Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park is a game reserve of red dunes, endless horizons and huge skies. It is home to the desert-adapted Kalahari lion as well as to leopard, cheetah, hyena and immense herds of springbok, gemsbok, blue wildebeest and eland. No-where in South Africa are you more likely to see cheetah than in its dry river beds. The open terrain is heaven for wildlife photographers.

Augrabies Falls and Namaqualand

The Augrabies Falls, where the mighty Orange River thunders through a 19 km ravine into a seemingly bottomless pool, is easily combined with a visit to the Kgalagadi transfrontier park. Accommodation in both National Parks is in simple air-conditioned and self-contained chalets.

Namaqualand, the coastal strip between the Atlantic Ocean and the Great Karoo to the east, is a sun-scorched semi-desert for most of the year. However, in August and September, following the winter rains, the vast Sandveld plains are cloaked in the brilliant oranges, purples and yellows of spring flowers such as daisies, mesembryanthemums, lilies and many others.
