Hermanus and the Overberg Home / South Africa / Hermanus and the Overberg
Hermanus and the Southern Cape, known as the Overberg, is a bountiful area of gentle rolling green pastures, vineyards, forests and unspoilt coastline between the Cape Winelands and the Garden Route. Hermanus and the Southern Cape boasts some of the finest land-based whale-watching in the world between July and December, when the Southern Right Whales come right into the bays to give birth. Enthralling whale sightings are a daily occurrence with spectacular whale breaches and whale song. Other delights of the Hermanus area are stunning beaches, coastal walking trails, excellent wine-tasting, beautiful fynbos and spring flowers.

Some visitors hurtle straight through to the Garden Route on the N2 highway but we recommend turning off to take the scenic coastal road to Hermanus, Gansbaai or Arniston for at least two nights or to take the scenic Route 62 to one of the other charming villages such as Robertson, Swellendam or Montagu. Most of these town can be reached from Cape Town in 1½ to 2 hours.

Highlights of Hermanus, Arniston and Swellendam

The cosmopolitan fishing village and resort of Hermanus offers all year round charm and stunning coastal scenery. Whale-watching in Hermanus, has gained a worldwide reputation. But Hermanus offers others charms as well: secluded sandy beaches are backed by velvety mountains covered with exceptional fynbos vegetation. The more adventurous can even experience cage diving amongst the sharks at Gansbaai near Hermanus.

The Fernkloof Nature Reserve has some superb Fynbos vegetation including proteas & ericas and peak flowering time is September to October. There are a number of walking trails and a selection of flowers in the reserve can be seen at the Visitors Centre.

One hour to the east lies the picturesque fishing village of Arniston, with its warm sandy beaches and turquoise blue seas. Visit Waenhuiskrans or Cape Agulhas, the southernmost tip of Africa.

The De Hoop Nature Reserve near Arniston is a peaceful nature reserve, which includes a scenic coastline with deserted beaches, rocky cliffs, coastal sand dunes and a freshwater lake. The walking trails through the fynbos are particularly fine and a ‘must’ if you are a keen bird-watcher.

Inland lies the picturesque town of Swellendam with its majestic oak trees, lovely gardens and well-preserved early Settler architecture. Relax among the towering peaks of the Langeberg Mountains with deep wooded valleys, visit the nearby Bontebok National Park or meander through its renowned museum of Settler life.

· Route 62, from Robertson all the way to the Little Karoo, is the world’s longest wine route, and offers a scenic alternative to the N2 highway. It meanders through a lush wine-growing region and past attractive towns, such as Robertson and Montagu.
