Cedarberg Home / South Africa / Cedarberg
The Cedarberg Mountains lie north of Cape Town, approximately two hours drive. Once over the Piekenierskloof pass, you descend into a different world: the country has changed: wilder, warmer with a raw, dramatic beauty. The towering Cedarberg mountains, brilliant purple in the late afternoon light, preside over a fruit-filled valley laden with the scent of orange blossom in the spring.

En route you may like to travel via the picturesque village of Tulbagh with its well restored Cape Dutch houses and excellent wine estates, or spend some time on the West Coast with its unique sandveld vegetation, picturesque fishing villages, long sandy beaches and immense bird colonies. (Adventure-seekers will enjoy quad biking on the sand dunes and whale-watching boat cruises.) Once in the Cedarberg, you can journey to the mission village of Wuppertal, walk in the mountains and explore the ancient San rock art of the Bushmen people. Or simply relax: swim in the natural waterfall rock pools and enjoy the exhilarating peace of one of the most beautiful and peaceful areas of South Africa.

Highlights of the Cedarberg

Walking - ancient forest trails take you through pristine mountain fynbos and past curious rock formations. The largely dry and sunny climate of the Cedarberg make it ideal for visitors all year round, but don’t plan a serious hiking tour for February – it’s too hot!

Rock Art - perhaps follow a walking trail to some of the San (Bushmen) rock paintings, created by the first inhabitants of the Cape. As you view these delicate pictures in their natural surroundings, there are no milling crowds to spoil your quiet enchantment.

Spring Flowers - The wild spring flowers are a spectacular sight with carpets of flowers in the Biedouw valley and towards the coast. August to mid September.

Other highlights include:
Wine-tasting - at the highest and award-winning wine estate in South Africa as well as a number of cellars in the Oliphants river valley.

Alfresco seafood lunches on the beach at nearby Lamberts Bay on the West Coast

Rooibos tea farm tours – to learn about the farming methods of Rooibos and see the drying tea fields and packing plant. You also explore the indigenous Fynbos vegetation in the Cedarberg.

Spectacular star-gazing at the Cedarberg observatory.

Donkey cart ride through magnificent mountain of the northern Cedarberg.

Adventure-seekers will enjoy quad biking on the sand dunes and whale-watching boat cruises at Lambert’s Bay
