The coast is perfect for unwinding before or after a safari or to get away from grey days in the Northern hemisphere. Lamu Island is a highlight; a magical, atmospheric, slightly crumbling old Arab port, in whose narrow alleys unique traditions and customs have been preserved from outside influence. At Malindi, a number of international-standard resorts lie on idyllic tropical beaches. Watamu, to the south is quieter and the Marine Reserve affords excellent snorkelling and diving. We can advise on resorts and fishing lodges to suit the time of year (tides affect the density of seaweed) and the time and budget that you have to spend.

| Laikipia and the Matthews Range |
In the Laikipia area there is a wealth of privately owned ranches, bush homes and conservancies - all acting to conserve wildlife outside of the National Parks and Reserves. This is a richly scenic region with a wide diversity of game. Camps are personal and intimate and the pace is relaxed. Further to the north is the Matthews Range, a remote and unspoilt area that rises from the grey desert of the country's Northern District. Wildlife find this verdant forest a natural refuge and elephant, lion, leopard, Greater Kudu, waterbuck, giant forest hog, buffalo and wild dog, are regularly sighted.

The Masai Mara is a unique game-studded area with a rich and constant wildlife presence all year round. Its greatest spectacle is July to October, when 1.4 million wildebeest and zebra surge up from the Serengeti plains of Tanzania in their annual search for the seasonal grasses that sustain them (see Serengeti for more on the migration). The panorama of the vast herds sweeping across the sweet grass is punctuated by individual struggles with the predators, drawn to take their part in this dramatic event. Balloon flights over the plains are a famous highlight, but the primary emphasis is on game drives. The Mara can be busy at times and other vehicles are easily spotted but it is a ‘must see’ area.

Wild, soul-stirring Samburu is home to several species not found elsewhere in Kenya, including the rare Reticulated Giraffe, Gerunuk, Somali Ostrich, Grevy's Zebra and Beisa Oryx. The birdlife here is among the most spectacular in the world, with over 400 species recorded.
Samburu National Reserve is nothing like as well-known or visited as some other conservation areas in Kenya, but this makes a visit all the more worthwhile.

The Great Rift Valley bisects Kenya, running south from Lake Turkana. The soda lakes of Bogoria, Elementaita and Nakuru attract swathes of flamingos, pelicans and other birds while the freshwater lakes of Naivasha and Baringo offer superb boating, fishing and, at Baringo, plenty of crocodile and hippo. Lake Nakuru also offers excellent viewing of the black rhino and the more elusive white rhino. Lake Bogoria is one of the few places where the rare and beautiful Greater Kudu can be seen. This area is often the relaxing starting point for a safari as it is driveable from Nairobi.
