Kafue
Kafue National Park, in the west of Zambia, is the third largest national park in Africa yet, despite its beauty and diversity, its comparative inaccessibility mean it remains gloriously untamed! A unique range of habitats, from the memorable Busanga floodplains in the northwest to the verdant vegetation of the south, supports a rewarding variety of wildlife. It is a birder’s paradise with nearly 500 species. Red lechwe, puku, sable and roan attract serval and plenty of lion. To the north, are the seasonally flooded Busanga Plains, a unique delta system not unlike the Okavango Delta.

Lower Zambezi
The Lower Zambezi National Park lies on the northern bank of the Zambezi river (overlooking Mana Pools on the southern bank). It is a rich and beautiful water sanctuary for wildlife - great herds of impala, elephant and buffalo, and small groups of warthog, zebra and baboon are drawn to the river and this in turn attracts lion and hyena. Behind the floodplain grasslands rises the picturesque wooded escarpment providing a natural boundary for the animals’ movements. Game viewing is varied in the Lower Zambezi and takes place on foot, in open vehicles and, most characteristically, by canoe, enabling the visitor to glide silently among animals quenching their thirst. Excellent fishing is also available on a catch and release basis.

South Luangwa
South Luangwa National Park, at the southern tip of the Great Rift Valley, is one of Africa’s premier wildlife sanctuaries. The brooding Luangwa River meanders through the luxuriant valley, supporting thousands of hippo and crocodile. South Luangwa has one of the greatest game concentrations in Africa: elephant, a wide variety of antelope, buffalo, kudu, zebra, Thornycroft’s giraffe and wildebeest occur in great numbers, as well as over 400 bird species. Lion, wild dog and hyena are also common and the park is famed for its excellent leopard sightings.

In the comfortable dry winter you can stay at small seasonal safari camps in glorious seclusion; the more sophisticated lodges, close to the main Mfuwe gate remain open all year. Many visitors spend a couple of nights here, where animals are relaxed and used to vehicles, then head into the wilderness.

Bush camps occupy prime sites on ancient oxbow lakes, amidst shady ebony groves. Some focus mostly on walking; others offer both game walks and day and night game drives in open vehicles. The standard of guiding is exceptionally good - walking safaris were pioneered in the Luangwa valley and it still sets the pace. Expert guides lead you through the bush, giving you the opportunity to observe the game at close quarters and gain fascinating insights into the ways of the wild - a magical experience.

Victoria Falls
The Victoria Falls, near Livingstone is a dramatic scenic contrast and a change of pace from the Zambian game reserves. One of the seven natural wonders of the world, Victoria Falls is a sight not to be missed. When the river is in spate in April and May, over a mile of unbroken surging water plunges into the Zambezi Gorge below. The clouds of spray generated by this thunderous descent have resulted in a lush rain forest full of stunning wild flowers.

The Victoria Falls is right on the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia and each country offers a different viewing perspective. In the dry season, the most spectacular and celebrated view of the Falls is from Livingstone Island, accessible from Zambia. Here too is one of the most exhilarating close-up views, from Knife Edge toward the Eastern Cataract. In peak flood, from February to June, the spray makes it hard to appreciate the full majesty of the Falls; so the best view of all is from the air. But at any time, a helicopter or fixed-wing 'Flight of Angels' is unforgettable. A microlight flight over the gorge and bungee jumping from the Zambezi railway bridge are available for the truly daring.

The Zambezi River has two characters - the wide gentle river above the Falls is the perfect place for languorous sunset boat cruises or gentle canoeing at sunset, whilst below the Falls, the more adventurous can enjoy serious white-water rafting or jet-boating. You can also sample an elephant-back safari and take part in their grooming and feeding activities.
