The Kalahari, Southern Namibia, Namibia

Quiver tree forest near Keetmanshoop

The Kalahari is one of Africa's last wildlife sanctuaries with many of nomadic herds of antelope followed by their ever-present predators.  The Kalahari is not actually a desert, contrary to popular belief, however 100m of red sand has created vast areas of waterless ground. Predators are well represented in the Kalahari and included lion, leopard, cheetah, hyenas and black-backed jackals. The bird and raptor life is prolific ranging in size from the pygmy falcon to the lappet-faced vulture.

Two other prominent features of the Kalahari Desert are the vast communal nests of the Sociable weaver birds and, of course, the endearing colonies of meetkats. You may also have the opportunity to meet the San people of the Kalahari and learn about their ancient arts of tracking wildlife and surviving in this beautiful wilderness.
