Okonjima & the Waterberg, Namibia

Visit Okonjima & the Africat Project, or the Waterberg en route to Etosha

Okonjima & the Waterberg Namibia

The central highlands of Namibia are the backbone of mountains that divide the coastal desert regions and the higher, more temperate interior. These rolling hills are home to many of Namibia’s sheep farms and ranches, some of which offer a ‘guest farm’ experience where you stay on the farm and experience first hand what it is like to farm in such a vast terrain.

Okonjima & the Africat Project

Others such as Okonjima and Erongo have turned to wildlife conservation many years ago. The Africat project on Okonjima is a pioneer in the world of wildlife research & conservation, focusing on rehabilitating cheetah and other predators into the wild. Okonjima  lies about half way between Windhoek and Etosha. Frans Indongo Lodge and Otjibamba Country Lodge are also convenient resting places in the same area.

Erongo Wilderness Lodge lies in the lovely Erongo highlands, which again lies approx half way between Swakopmund and Etosha.

Waterberg Namibia

To the east lies the Waterberg Plateau National Park, a flat-topped sandstone plateau rising 150 metres above the surrounding plains. The Waterberg is home to a number of endangered species including eland, sable and roan antelope and both white and black rhino. You may also see wild dogs, tsessebe antelope, buffaloes and cheetah - indeed it is one of the best places in Africa to see cheetah and leopards. It is known for its hiking trips on the top of the plateau. We recommend Waterberg Guest Farm or Plateau Lodge here.
