Pemba & Quirimbas, Mozambique

The Quirimbas offer world-class diving, centuries of history & culture aswell as unspoilt islands

The 32 coral islands of the Quirimbas Archipelago in Mozambique make up one of the last remaining unexplored areas of Africa’s coast. The Quirimbas islands stretch for over 100km in the far north of Mozambique. The southernmost 11 of these islands, and a vast expanse of mainland forest, are included in the Quirimbas National Park - a conservation effort to preserve and protect the beauty of the Quirimbas archipelago.

The Quirimbas is particularly known for its world class scuba diving. The complete lack of development in the Quirimbas archipelago has meant that the coral here has not suffered the degradation seen elsewhere. The colours of the reefs are vibrant and pristine and the warm Indian Ocean waters teem with fish. It will also suit couples seeking a truly remote tropical island destination for their honeymoon.

The gateway to the Quirimbas islands is the coastal town of Pemba, with its huge natural harbour, famous Wimbe beach and atmospheric souk market. This lively town is a complete contrast to the tranquillity of the islands but has its own unique appeal. On the islands, the Quirimbas is home to some exciting eco-tourism developments such as Vamizi Lodge, whilst Ibo Island Lodge offers a unique cultural experience steeped in history. Matemo and Medjumbe resorts are perfect for keen divers and honeymoons.

The Quirimbas or the Benguerra Islands?

The Quirimbas Islands could be for you if you:
• Are really into your diving
• Want to have a truly away-from-it all beach holiday or honeymoon
• Are a well-heeled eco-tourist keen to experience authentic Mozambican culture and architecture especially on Ibo Island.
• Don’t mind spending some money for the privilege

How to get to the Quirimbas Archipelago

Direct flights connect Pemba with Johannesburg, Dar es Salaam and even South Africa's Kruger airport but these are not yet daily. From Pemba you take a short flight onto the island beach lodge of your choice. This ranges from 20 to 40 minutes depending on which lodge you choose.
