Malawi Safaris & First-hand Reviews of Malawi Safari Lodges & Camps

Malawi claims to be the ‘Warm Heart of Africa’ and this is not just glib marketing-speak. Although not as rich in game as other countries in Africa, the magic of Malawi lies in its marvellously friendly and laid-back people, its glorious scenery, its superb flora and birdlife – and of course the wonderful Lake Malawi. If you enjoy experiencing authentic African culture and chatting to local people, then Malawi makes the ideal holiday or safari in Africa!

Malawi is a small sliver of a country dominated by the most appealing of the great lakes of Africa. Lake Malawi, the lake of stars, is three quarters of the length of Malawi and has crystal clear waters teeming with colourful fish. Its sandy beaches and coves are a popular spot for relaxing after a safari in the Liwonde National Park in Malawi or perhaps in neighbouring Zambia. Lake Malawi is one of the most popular freshwater scuba diving locations in the world. You can also enjoy snorkelling, kayaking, sailing or just relaxing on the lakeshore.

Further south is the main wildlife reserve of Malawi, the scenic Liwonde National Park with its large herds of elephant, and in the south lies Mount Mulanje and the Zomba Plateau offering hiking and walking trails. Malawi offers a safari or holiday in Africa with a touch of adventure.

When to enjoy a Malawi holiday
Malawi is a year round destination. January to March is warm but wet, excellent for flowers. April to December is warm, clear and dry with some rain in April and November. This time matches the best time for wildlife safaris in Malawi and Zambia. The lake is calmest between November and March so this is the best time for diving. The windy season on the lake tends to be June/July.

Travel to and in Malawi
You can fly to Lilongwe, the capital city of Malawi from the UK via Nairobi (Kenya) or Johannesburg (South Africa). There are also regional flights from the South Luangwa Park in Zambia to Lilongwe with connecting charter flights onto Lake Malawi so that you can combine a safari with some time on the beach. Travel within Malawi is relatively easy with most of our clients using a local driver to transfer them by road between Lake Malawi, Liwonde National Park, the Zomba Plateau and Lilongwe. Light aircraft charters are also used for destinations further afield.
