Unless you are happy to be one of several honeymooners, this may not necessarily mean the places that shout the loudest about discounted honeymoon rates. We’ve checked out places offering character, romance and high standards of service ranging from bush to beach, rainforest to red desert dunes, including exotic islands in Seychelles, Madagascar and Mozambique, wine estates in South Africa, palatial tree houses and luxury tented safari camps.

Beach Honeymoons in Africa
For those in the Northern Hemisphere, the notion of the ubiquitous ‘week on the beach’ is deeply embedded in our psyche. A honeymoon isn’t a proper honeymoon unless we have bleached our hair with salt, wind and sun and covered at least one paperback with sand. Combine enticing tropical islands, golden beaches and romantic beach lodges with Africa’s pristine wilderness for the ultimate African honeymoon safari.

The good news is that there are some terrific unspoilt beaches in Southern and East Africa for your African honeymoon. The bad news is that they are not all uniformly wonderful all year round; monsoons affect East Africa, and most of the South Africa coast is coldish in the winter months. Similarly other destinations in Africa vary by season. So, your choice should be influenced by when you can get away for your honeymoon.

Safari Honeymoons for March to May
Head south for your honeymoon to avoid the ‘long rains’ in East Africa in April and May. The Indian Ocean islands of Mozambique, Mauritius and the Seychelles and the northern coast of KwaZulu Natal in South Africa are top choices for warm seas. Safari Honeymoons for June to August
Very pleasant temperatures on the coast of Tanzania and Kenya and the Indian Ocean Islands but, though it’s a great time for a honeymoon safari, it can be chilly in Southern Africa. This is the time to:

Safari Honeymoons for Sept to November
For a honeymoon safari, this is one of the best times for game-viewing throughout Africa with good weather on the Islands and Indian Ocean coast. Temperatures are warming up everywhere. Swimming off the coast of South Africa is attractive again. Witness the Migration in the Masai Mara or combine Cape Town, the peak flood in the Okavango Delta and Victoria Falls. Check out

Safari Honeymoons for December to February
This is mid-summer, hot and sunny. Ideal African honeymoon combinations include Cape Town, green season Botswana and Victoria Falls, to take advantage of the best weather in the Cape and great seasonal offers on safari. All of the Southern and East African beaches and the Indian Ocean Islands are hottest and sunniest at this time, but book early, especially if travelling out or back between mid December and mid January. In the Cape (South Africa) there is little chance of rain so this is a great time to check out Cape Town and the Winelands.
