A romantic African honeymoon doesn't have to be lazing on a golden beach. Your honeymoon vacation could be spent on a Big Five safari, perhaps enjoying a walking safari in the game-rich wilderness or staying at one of our luxurious game lodges? What about canoeing or boating on one of Africa's great rivers on your honeymoon? Or perhaps head into the mountains or indulge in your love of great food and wine...
Your African honeymoon can easily combine a bit of bush and beach for the best of both worlds.
African Honeymoon Safaris - Bush and Beach
Each safari area has its unique charms, 'special' animals and outstanding guides. Increasingly some of the safari lodges offer a truly romantic experience. See Suggested Hotels and Lodges for our recommendations. Why not combine a few nights on safari with some days relaxing on a tropical beach? The Sabi Sands, Timbavati and other private game reserves adjacent to the Kruger are easily combined with the Benguerra Islands off Mozambique as there are direct flights from the Kruger to Vilancoulos. Similarly you can enjoy a Maputaland
safari at Phinda Rock or Vlei Lodge, Amakhosi or White Elephant Safari Lodge with some days at the pristine beaches of the Kosi Coastal Reserve - Thonga Beach Lodge or Rocktail Bay Lodge. Yet again you can witness great herds of game migrating across acacia-studded plains in East Africa and then complement this with relaxing by the Indian Ocean on Lamu, Pemba or Mnemba Island.
In South Africa, the Sabi Sands, Timbavati and other private game reserves adjacent to the Kruger are easily combined with the Benguerra Islands off Mozambique as there are direct flights from the Kruger to Vilanculos. Similarly you can enjoy a Maputaland safari at Phinda Rock or Vlei Lodge, or White Elephant Safari Lodge with some days at the pristine beaches of Thonga Beach Lodge or Rocktail Bay Lodge. Many of our Suggested Honeymoon Safaris include just such an element of 'bush and beach'.
African Honeymoon - Rivers
Spend some of your African honeymoon chilling out on the banks of the Zambezi river near to Victoria Falls. You can spend your days boating on the river, playing tennis or croquet, lazing by a pool or sipping cocktails as you idly watch hippo frolic on the opposite bank but, if the mood takes you, there is a huge range of other fun on offer such as white water rafting, helicopter flips, canoeing at sunset, elephant back safaris...
Further downstream, the Lower Zambezi National Park lies on the northern bank of the Zambezi river. It is a rich and beautiful water sanctuary for wildlife - great herds of impala, elephant and buffalo, and small groups of warthog, zebra and baboon are drawn to the river and this in turn attracts lion and hyena. Behind the floodplain grasslands rises the picturesque wooded escarpment. Game viewing is on foot, in open vehicles and, most characteristically, by canoe, enabling the visitor to glide silently among animals quenching their thirst.
African Honeymoon - Lakes and Mountains
If your spirit is soothed more by glorious scenery than by burning shores, then your African honeymoon will be less constrained by seasonal factors. Lodges in areas which get cold in winter such as the Drakensberg Mountains will have roaring log fires, frequently in guest bedrooms as well. And in summer you can bathe in rock pools and mountain streams. Some hotels and country lodges have risen to the challenge of providing cuisine so delicious that you'll hike for miles just to be able to fit in all the courses!
African Honeymoon - Gourmet Food and Wine
The Cape Winelands are a tranquil and romantic end to any African honeymoon. Stay on a wine estate for glorious mountain views or in one of the picturesque towns so that you can sample different restaurants on foot. The pleasure of this honeymoon is the enjoyment of the good life: appreciating the wine and the unique Cape architecture; savouring long, lazy meals at one of the many excellent bistros; debating the merits of the latest award-winning vintages; or browsing in the craft studios and art galleries. Cape Town is less than an hour's drive if bright lights beckon... |
