Eastern Highlands and Ile Sainte Marie

The pint-sized ‘continent’ of Madagascar split from Godwanaland some 165 million years ago. A Noah’s ark of sorts sailing away to the east. This isolation led to a separate evolution of flora and fauna. Creating a paradise for nature-lovers with over 20,000 species of flora and fauna. 80% of which are not found anywhere else on this planet! This strangest of islands is an incredibly exciting destination. Known for its lemurs, orchids (1000 species), chameleons (over 70% of the world’s population) and frogs (a mere 150 species).

The Tour:

This 9 night tour is an attractive option! It allows you to see both the Eastern Rainforests, the canal de Pangalanes and also the lovely Ile Sainte Marie. It also has only one domestic flight so you don’t have to keep returning to Antananarivo.

You begin with the lush Eastern rainforest area of the Andasibe-Mantadia Natural Park. Famed for its rainforest animals, including the indri indri as well as birds, insect life and frogs. You enjoy morning walks in the forest and night walks in season.

Next you head to the Eastern coast of Madagascar to the unique canal and lake system called the Canal de Pangalanes. This scenic wetlands area is also home to the Palmarium Reserve. This private reserve makes for a good adjunct to the Andasibe-Mantadia National Park. Because they have introduced lemurs from various parts of Madagascar so that you see a broader range in close quarters.

This is perfect for keen photographers as you see first lemurs in the natural primary forest and then in this secondary forest area. There is also an opportunity to see the extremely rare Aye Aye nocturnal lemur on a night walk in a specially created island reserve.

Next you take a scenic drive up the coastal road staying overnight in the old colonial,  town of Tomasina (Tamatave) . The following morning you enjoy a scenic drive up the coast to the ferry for the boat cruise to Ile Sainte Marie for 2 nights.

It is very easy to add extra nights in Ile Sainte Marie and we recommend 3-4 nights as the ideal, if you have the time.

Uganda Explorer Safari

Posted on December 20, 2017 by -

This Uganda Explorer safari (from Entebbe ) is primarily about visiting and tracking the Mountain Gorillas in Uganda. There is the opportunity to trek gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest as well as taking forest walks. The gorilla experience is followed by a visit to Queen Elizabeth National Park.  The safari is based on staying in good lodges and luxury tented camps. Whilst transport is by a combination of scheduled flights and customized 4 x 4 safari vehicle.

The tour is suitable for fairly fit people as it involves walking in rugged conditions. It operates with a minimum of 2 people and maximum of 6 people in specially customized 4 x 4 safari vehicles. The nights under canvas will still give you private bathrooms with a flush toilet and al fresco bucket shower. All meals, two scheduled domestic flights, guiding and transport, set safari activities, park fees are included in our price as well as one Gorilla tracking permit and two Chimpanzee tracking permits. (Please compare apples with applies!)

Scheduled or Private departures?

The Uganda Explorer has 18 scheduled departures in 2018 throughout the year, which may appeal to solo travelers.  The main reason for picking one of these dates is that there will be gorilla tracking permits reserved for guests on these dates. This will matter even more if you would like to track the gorillas on two consecutive days. With so few permits being issued each day, you can imagine this could be a real challenge, otherwise.

However, the same itinerary can be taken on a private basis on any departure date at a broadly similar cost. But we’ll only confirm the trip once we have obtained gorilla tracking permits. If you plan well ahead, it is still possible to track gorillas twice. But if booking within a few months of travel, this would be unlikely.

On private safaris the game drives and vehicle will be exclusive use. But activities such as primate tracking and boat cruises will be shared with other guests. Given the focus on gorilla tracking, there is an age restriction of no under 15’s. So scheduled departures are only suitable for families with children of 16 years and above.
