This 9 night Zambia Family safari combines three of the highlights of Zambia. The game-rich South Luangwa National Park. The beautiful Lower Zambezi National Park on the Zambezi river & the exciting Victoria Falls.

We have chosen safari camps and lodges in Zambia which are particularly known for their child-friendliness. Both Nkwali and Kasaka River Lodge have a dedicated children’s programme.

The basic Zambia Family safari tour assumes one family with two children but if you have a larger family party, an attractive alternative is to upgrade to one of the Safari Lodges of Zambia such as Luangwa Safari House in the South Luangwa park and Chongwe River House in the Lower Zambezi area.

If you have more time to spend we recommend adding a third night at Victoria Falls as there are so many interesting excursions on offer. The safari can be routed in a different order depending on the flight connections for your particular dates.

Safari Offer

This safari includes complimentary flights (prices as such) in and out of the Lower Zambezi, assuming you arrive on a Thursday and depart on a Tuesday. This means the safari begins in Lusaka on a Monday and ends in Livingstone on a Thursday. If you want to arrive on a different day, there will be a price increase and we may substitute Kasaka River Lodge to keep a lid on prices.

Day 1

3 nights South Luangwa National Park, Fully Inclusive

On arrival at Lusaka International Airport, you check in for your scheduled charter flight to Mfuwe Airport close to the South Luangwa National Park.

On arrival, you are transferred to the lodge (40 minute drive). This is quite a busy road and as you travel through the villages, your drive is punctuated by the opportunistic greetings of savvy youngsters, who wave madly in the hope of sweets!

On arrival at Nkwali you settle into your family suite. The family suite has an en suite bedroom and a separate sitting room which can sleep two children.

Nkwali Camp is on the banks of the Luangwa river overlooking the South Luangwa National Park. There are large lawned areas where the children can play under the shade of huge ebony trees. The staff are fun, friendly and competent and the safari activities will be individually tailored to your family taking your children’s ages and temperament into account. You will usually have a safari vehicle and guide to yourself.

This is superb game-viewing country, famous for leopard and giraffe sightings. This charming small camp of six thatched en suite chalets has an unusual bar encircling an enormous ebony tree.

Particular activities for children include nature walks around the camp to identify and learn about animal spoor, droppings, visits to the local Kawaza school to meet Zambian children. They can also participate at a local workshop making elephant dung paper and greeting cards.

Safari packs are given to each child with quizzes, animal books etc. They can also help the camp staff if they wish, making biscuits for afternoon tea or collecting food for lunch from the vegetable garden or eggs from the chickens.

Days 2-3

On safari in South Luangwa, Fully Inclusive

Your family safari will be tailored to your family’s needs and children’s ages and attention spans. Broadly speaking you usually enjoy an early morning game drive immediately after early morning tea and coffee, as the animals rise early to hunt in the cool of the day. Child minding is available if you have very young children. The game drive finishes in time for brunch, which will be keenly appreciated after your early morning start! After brunch, you can simply relax around the lodge or at the fenced swimming pool during the heat of the day.

Afternoon tea is served just before your late afternoon game drive. This drive will introduce you to some of the nocturnal animals and their predators as they become active and begin to hunt. You stop for drinks at sunset to enjoy the sounds and smells of the bush before continuing with the night drive, depending on how tired your children are. Afterwards you return for an atmospheric dinner back at the lodge. Children can eat special children’s meals as soon as they return to camp as they will be hungry after the exciting day.

Day 4

4 nights Lower Zambezi, Full Board & Game activities

Today you return to Mfuwe Lodge and enjoy a scheduled charter flight from Mfuwe back to Lusaka and then on to the Lower Zambezi airstrip for your four night safari in the Lower Zambezi National Park. At the airstrip, you are met by your ranger for the short road transfer to Royal Zambezi Lodge.

The Lower Zambezi National Park is an exceptionally beautiful park bounded by the Zambezi river on one side. Behind the floodplains rises a dramatic wooded escarpment which provides both a picturesque backdrop for your photographs, but more pertinently, a natural boundary for the animals’ movements. One of the most attractive aspects about a safari in the Lower Zambezi is that game-viewing activities are very varied. Game activities take place on foot, in open 4×4 vehicles, by boat and, most characteristically, by canoe.

Royal Zambezi Lodge is a luxury tented camp on the banks of the Zambezi River about 4 kilometres upstream from the Lower Zambezi National Park. This safari is based on the Acacia Suite but families can upgrade to one of the Hippo Pod Chalets if they prefer.

Day 5 to 7

On safari in Lower Zambezi, Full Board & Game activities

This morning you decide on what activity takes your fancy. Perhaps take a boat cruise or a game drive or try your hand at tiger fishing on a catch and release basis. Your guide is on hand to discuss the various options with you.

The middle part of the day is usually spent relaxing at the lodge, swimming in the pool whilst your children are kept entertained. The pattern for the afternoon is similar to the first day with afternoon tea followed by the safari activity of your choice. As the sun sets, an afternoon drive may become a sunset boat cruise watching the animals as they come to drink at the river. Afterwards you return for an atmospheric dinner back at the lodge

Day 8

Fly to Victoria Falls, 2 nights Waterberry Lodge, Full Board & 1 Activity per day

Today you return to the airstrip for your flight to Livingstone (sometimes via Lusaka). On arrival at Livingstone Airport, you are met by and transferred by road to Zambezi Waterberry Lodge.

The Victoria Falls, known as one of the Seven Wonders of the World, is a sight not to be missed – the clouds of spray generated by this thunderous descent have resulted in a lush rain forest and the most spectacular views of the Falls are from the Zambian side of the gorge.

Waterberry Lodge lies on the banks of the spectacular Zambezi River with wonderful views to the Zimbabwe game reserve on the opposite bank. It’s also very proud of its cuisine with meals usually enjoyed alfresco, perhaps in the bush or enjoy a barbecue cooked under the stars.
