| Uganda is home to three groups of gorillas habituated to visitors. There can be few more moving experiences than meeting the brown-eyed gaze of the hugely endangered mountain gorilla of Uganda. You must be prepared to trek for up to seven arduous hours for the reward of an encounter with a 220kg ‘silverback’ gorilla but the anticipation is matched only by the euphoria after the short audience. Uganda has the widest range of primates in Africa. About half of the world’s population of roughly 650 live in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest; about 45 in Mgahinga and the remainder in the Rwanda part of the Virunga massif. Aside from the gorillas, a Uganda safari offers a luxuriant and fertile landscape with vivid green forests, snow-capped peaks, low swamps and lakes.

The best time for gorilla safaris in Uganda is in the dry seasons from January to February and June to July. The scenery is at its best during the rains from March to May and from October to November. Although conditions are more challenging in the wet season, primate tracking is easier as groups are less active. People in Uganda are friendly and welcoming to the small numbers of overseas visitors. Uganda is undoubtedly an adventure destination, with an edginess that sets it apart from neighbouring Tanzania and Kenya.
