Overview
Summerfields Rose Retreat and Spa is nestled on 100ha in a secluded valley near Hazyview in Mpumalanga province, close to the sights of the Blyde River Canyon. The luxury lodge, spa and restaurant are all set on Summerfields Rose Farm, famous for its export quality hybrid tea roses and macadamia nuts (which are also available for sale at the farm).
Accommodation at Summerfields
There are 11 exclusive tented suites, the Jackalberry tented suite and one timber forest honeymoon suite under a canopy of Jackalberry and Tambotie trees, surrounded by nature with the sounds of cascading water amplified by a choir of bird calls and the occasional snort of a hippo. Each luxurious suite ensures total privacy. Attention to detail is evident in every suite, with specially designed furniture, percale linen and of course the fragrance of fresh cut roses from the farm. All tented suites are air-conditioned with additional roof fans, en suite bathrooms with double vanities, outdoor shower and bath. The Jackalberry and honeymoon suites have open plan bedrooms and bathrooms with large verandas.
At the Summerfield Spa you will find both indulgence in a variety of unique, signature treatments and facilities such as the rose quartz steam shower.

Forest Room
Timber honeymoon suite. This upmarket suite overlooks the forest and is fully equipped to make your stay the ultimate experience. This unit has an open plan bedroom and bathroom with a large veranda. Our Forest Room has air-conditioning, roof fans, large bath sheets, bath gowns, tea and coffee making facilities, fridge, hairdryer, electronic safe and a range of quality toiletries. This suite is only sold on half board.
Jackalberry Suite
Our Jackalberry Suite is our largest open plan tented suite. This upmarket suite overlooks the Sabie River and is fully equipped to make your stay the ultimate experience. This unit has an open plan bedroom and bathroom with a large veranda overlooking the bushveld (a sleeper couch is available in the unit for a young adult to use. This is available on request). Our Jackalberry Suite has air-conditioning, roof fans, large bath sheets, bath gowns, tea and coffee making facilities, fridge, hairdryer, electronic safe and a range of quality toiletries. This suite is only sold on half board.
Summerfield Rose Retreat and Spa by Ginny Russell
Summerfields Rose Retreat and Spa is ideal for travelers who don't want to leave the bush when they leave the game parks. Despite being only a few kilometers from the Perry's Bridge mall intersection in Hazyview , the lodge is located on the banks of the rushing Sabi River. Visitors wind through the macadamia plantations of a working farm then through ornate but rusty gates to reach an area of dense, lush riverine bush.The sound of the rapids is the ideal soundtrack to a massage in the spa or a sundowner looking out for hippo on the lawns. A wooden walkway winds from the six secluded guest tents, via the pool deck and spa,to a riverbank bistro serving breakfast and lunch.
The tented suites are a timber and canvas construction on stilts,angled carefully to give enough privacy for a romantic and semi-open bathroom and a chill out spot with comfy day bed outside the large tented bedroom.The effect is elegant yet rustic, with carefully chosen materials allowed to weather naturally. Inside the tents are all the pampering amenities and necessities a guest might need, which is important as there is no room service and many visitors do quite like to hole up and enjoy the sylvan surroundings, venturing out only to drive up the hill to the excellent restaurant. Popular with locals and guests from other nearby lodges, this is a real foodie treat. It is best to book early to make the most of the small but exquisite menu,which is based on home-grown organic vegetables and local produce.
The only caveat about Summerfield is that it might not suit those who are not "tent people", despite the luxuriousness, especially as the presence of water increases the likelyhood of encountering "bugs".
