Mdonya Old River Camp

CEDARBERG RATING

Comfortable

Overview

Mdonya Old River Camp is located deep in the untramelled wilderness of Ruaha National Park. With just 12 tents spread among many shade trees, it's a simple bush camp which remains connected with the surrounding wilderness. As it’s such a remote area, you are right among the animals which often wander through camp.

The dining and lounge tents are open sided with views to the dry river bed, which is used by the game as a corridor to fresh grasses. Comfortable sofas and chairs are brightly coloured with coffee table books on hand. Evening dining is a convivial affair lit with candles and storm lanterns.

Accommodation

The 12 Meru-style tents  - three of which can be adapted for family use - are simply but comfortably furnished with large double or twin beds, writing desk and chair, hanging space for clothes, lockable trunk for valuables. The large en suite bathroom has an open-roofed shower with hot running water and separate flush loo. Outside is a shaded veranda with deck chairs. There is no electricity in the rooms (though camera and other batteries can be charged up overnight in their office).

Game-viewing at Mdonya

Mdonya Old River Camp offers game drives – usually with a driver and guide - and a huge selection of birdlife. The transfer into the camp from the airstrip also takes the form of a game drive. Ruaha is the place to see the big cats including lions, leopard, cheetah and lesser known but rarely seen cats such as serval, caracal and African wild cats.
