Overview

The exclusive Matemwe Retreat is located on a beautiful stretch of private land opposite the Mnemba atoll in the north-east coast of Zanzibar. The lodge is 50 minutes road transfer from Zanzibar airport.

Four self-contained and exclusive private villas make up Matemwe Retreat, each with uninterrupted views of the turquoise Indian Ocean. The ground floor of each villa features a private cocktail bar, air-conditioned bedroom, bathroom with double basins, shower, and large romantic bathtub overlooking the Indian Ocean. Hot water & lighting are solar powered. Upstairs there's a plunge pool on the private roof terrace (60 m²), complete with sunny and shaded decks. Each villa at Matemwe Retreat has a spacious veranda and its own area of private beach right in front of it.

Dining

Breakfast is served on the private veranda of your villa at Matemwe Retreat. Later the manager or chef will drop by to discuss your lunch & dinner preferences and advise of the fresh catches of the day specials. Meals can be served on your roof terrace or on the beach or at Matemwe's main lodge, where you can mix with other guests. Massages & beauty treatments can also be arranged on your roof terrace overlooking the Indian Ocean.

As it's so private, Matemwe Retreat is perfect for those wishing to escape into your own private world. However, if you enjoy mixing with other guests and having a more social time, then Matemwe Retreat may not be for you!

Activities at Matemwe Retreat

Activities include spectacular diving and snorkelling. There's a watersports centre at the main lodge where ocean trips with snorkeling equipment can be easily arranged. You can snorkel straight from the beach or visit the nearby reefs such as Mnemba. Kayaks are available to explore the crystal clear sea.

Diving

Guests at Matemwe Retreat are welcome to use the dive centre at Matemwe Lodge next door. Local snorkeling/diving sites are suitable for all levels of experience, from beginners to experienced divers. You might find dolphins in the water that come close to your boat or for the lucky ones even spot a whale passing by the reef (best chance for whales at Matemwe Retreat in the period August - October).

Cultural Visits from Matemwe

Visits to the neighboring village can be arranged to explore the local Zanzibar culture and village life. For visitors keen to learn about Matemwe Retreat community projects such as a chicken and duck farm and a fishing programme.
