Elephant Pepper Camp

Overview

Elephant Pepper Camp is situated in the protected Mara North Conservancy wilderness area. This is a part of the Greater Masai Mara and this is on the great wildebeest migration. There has been a camp on this location for twenty years; it is one of the original, very small and exclusive tented camps in Kenya. Elephant Pepper is located well away from other lodges in the heart of the African bush.  This is a really great place to experience the Mara as it can be seen through your tent flaps.

Elephant Pepper Camp had extensive refurbishments in the beginning of 2014, and for you the results mean much greater comfort. The eight new luxury safari tents are roomier, brighter and offer more spacious en suite bathroom areas than before. Your spacious canvas tent is very comfortably furnished. And is dressed with Indian Raj Campaign furniture mixing dark wood with typically intricate brass fittings.  This gives the tent a very elegant feel but still retains that classic feel of the safari tent. They now even have flush toilets as there is now running water throughout the camp, including the showers.

The tents are sheltered by a grove of fig and Elephant Pepper Trees and they’re spaced out for your privacy. You can watch wildlife roam on the savanna plains from your own veranda or even the hammock. All tents can fit one extra bed to accommodate children under the age of 16 years. If you are a family there are brand new Family Tents also with running water showers.

Nothing is quite like sitting around the campfire. Enjoying the sounds of the African night and staring into the glowing embers. So, evenings at Elephant Pepper Camp are spent by the campfire overlooking the plains, lit only by the soft glow of hurricane lamps and dinner under the stars is a special feature. The camp has a very homely atmosphere: everyone eats together around a communal table sharing the day's safari experiences. The chefs prepare tasty meals often using northern Italian menus from the owner's family as well as other European and local dishes.

Game activities

In extended game drives in 4x4 game vehicles you can experience some of the unique wildlife experiences in the world. Elephant Pepper Camp brings you back to nature: no traffic, no permanent structures, just the sights and sounds of the African bush. The camp lies in a prime, but secluded, game-viewing area away from the hustle and bustle of other Masai Mara camps. It's situated next to a water hole, so even in the dry periods there is plenty of plains game around camp.

As well as morning and afternoon game drives into the Masai Mara, being in its own wilderness concession means that Elephant Pepper Camp can offer night drives  to spot the many nocturnal species. Guided bush walks with an experienced walking guide are also a key component of the experience. Bush breakfasts or sundowners on the open plains of the Mara are a safari tradition.

Mara North Conservancy is a privately managed conservancy in the core of the Masai Mara, game driving in Mara North is restricted to those vehicles belonging to lodges within the conservancy, so Elephant Pepper guests have this outstanding part of the Masai Mara, almost to themselves.

My Favourite

"The first camp in Elephant pepper was I think my favorite – although we loved all of the camps. We saw a wide range of game. Our driver,Leperes, was phenomenal and really shared a lot of the local culture along with the wildlife knowledge. The food was varied and good, although the portions smaller. We had the family tent (for the 3 of us) at the end on one side, which made it extra special – spacious, clean and open views. (Just an fyi—the wifi was weak at this remote tent, but the location well worth it). I would want to be able to book this again and could easily stay a week. "
