This is a hidden gem on the private island of Quililea and offers a relaxed Robinson Crusoe castaway ambience alongside luxury and modern comfort. Snorkel the island’s shores, dive from the main beach, kayak the mangroves or relax in a hammock beneath the giant baobabs – this is the ultimate private luxury hideaway.
Azura Quilalea forms part of the marine sanctuary around the magnificent Quirimbas Archipelago in Mozambique. The island is 34 hectares in area and lies alongside a deep 70 metre channel with direct access to the Indian Ocean. The Sanctuary is a nursery for nesting green and hawk beak turtles and humpback whales shelter their young here before migrating south.
Accommodation at Azura Quilalea
Azura Quilalea features 9 seafront very private villas stretched along two beaches of Mozambique. 4 Kaskazi villas have views to the Quirimbas Island and face the rising sun. The 4 Kusi villas have a more private location with an extra outdoor shower and private sala with hammocks for relaxing. These face the setting sun. Note that the Kazaki villas are on a more shelly beach so we recommend the slightly more expensive Kusi villas.
All have kingsize double beds, convertible into twin beds if you wish. Each villa is constructed with indigenous materials and handcrafted timber, has double ceiling fans, indoor/outdoor shower, twin basins and separate toilet and bidet. A wooden safe box is provided as well as mini-bar and air-conditioning if required. A corner settee is crafted in the Ibo style with a local marble coffee table. Each villa opens onto a private veranda with its own panoramic view.
The Villa Quilalea, perched on the clifftop, offers superb accommodation in a private secluded location with its own private rimflow pool, stunning bathroom, dressing room, outdoor shower and separate sitting room. It even has its own ocean access from a cliff top stepladder!
All of the villas have a unique energy control system whereby guests can take control of their own eco-footprint. All mod cons are there if desired, including mini bar and air-conditioning, or guests can throw their villa open to being air-cooled by the natural breezes.
For a larger family party or group of friends, you can also take the whole 86 pristine acres of Azura Quilalea for your own private use.
The dining and lounge areas are situated to benefit from sunrise and sunset and overlook the sea. Board games are available. Traditional loungers and day beds are placed at each villa. The marine pavilion and bar with satellite TV overlook a plunge pool and faces west over the channel. The pavilion is a dive and sport fishing center with a full range of Mares equipment and Shimano fishing tackle.
Activities at Azura Quilalea
Azura Quilalea is paradise for lovers of marine life. The snorkelling and diving is superb in the Quirimbas and snorkelling is possible from the beaches of Mozambique. There is a Padi 5 star dive centre and unusually, the island offers diving from the beach in water temperatures ranging between 24 and 28 degrees Celsius. You can enjoy big game fishing, watch the sunset as you sail on their traditional dhow, picnic in splendid isolation, or cruise to other deserted beaches. Dolphins are often spotted from their boats as well as humpback whales on their seasonal migration. You can kayak at leisure or enjoy a guided kayak through the mangrove channels.
