Nkwali Camp is built on private land overlooking the South Luangwa National Park, on the banks of the wide Luangwa River. Nkwali Camp is owned and operated by Robin Pope Safaris, who also offer walking safaris and two seasonal camps to the north of the South Luangwa National Park. The area around Nkwali is superb game-viewing country, famous for leopard and giraffe sightings, with a beautiful area of ebony woodland and open grass plains. This small camp of six thatched en suite chalets has an unusual bar encircling an enormous ebony tree and a dining room overlooking the lagoon. Elephant often cross the Luangwa river and are seen from the bar at Nkwali Camp.
The chalets are cool and spacious, overlooking the river, and have an en suite semi-open bathroom with flush loo and double shower. There’s a honeymoon suite and family suite with two bedrooms both en suite. Activities include morning and evening game drives, walking safaris and excellent birding due to the surrounding wooded vegetation. Being fairly south, Nkwali is open year round unlike most camps in the Luangwa valley. You can also visit to the local village and school of Kawaza. There’s also a small secluded swimming pool. Transfer time from Mfuwe Airport is approx 40 minutes.
Nkwali welcomes children aged over 7 and the self-contained Robin’s House also accommodates families with children of any age.
ROBIN’S HOUSE lies on the edge of Nkwali Camp. Recently renovated, this private house is ideal for families or guests looking for a little privacy. It is set apart from the camp, on the banks of the Luangwa River (though guests can enjoy all the facility of the main camp as well such as the swimming pool and bar). Robin’s House has an amazing view of the river and the animals that come down to drink. It is under a grove of large trees and is well shaded. There are two bedrooms (double and triple), each with its own large en suite bathroom, and a central sitting room and dining room. There's a private kitchen and chef, along with a batman/valet, so meals can be served where and when you like. There is also a private guide and safari vehicle for the game-viewing activities. |

Kate stayed at Nkwali in Sept 2006: "I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Nkwali Camp. Though it is outside the park gates, the transfer to the gate was only 20 minutes, and this was partly because we had to keep stopping to photograph the many elephants and other wildlife that we saw outside the park. On another game drive, we crossed the river by an exciting sand bank route (the river being to low to use the pontoon which is the usual method of crossing). This gave us the added advantage that we accessed the South Luangwa Park in a more southerly position that the majority of game vehicles so that our game-viewing was secluded and unhurried.
Nkwali Camp was charming. It is not a luxurious camp but then few camps are in Zambia but it had everything that I needed including delicious light lunches full of salads.
The game-viewing experience with Robin Pope Safaris is excellent. The quality of their game vehicles is very high. Two vehicles have only three rows of seats instead of the more usual four and so they are particularly spacious with wide shelves for supporting heavy camera equipment. The other notable point is that they have sufficient guides and vehicles to allow a considerable degree of flexibility whilst on safari. If you want to go walking whilst other people in your party or on your vehicles want to drive, then a guide will take two people walking and another guide will take the rest of the party. These intangible aspects are worth considering when deciding on which safari company to choose."
Ginny visited Nkwali: "Nkwali is in the southern section of the valley. This means that their game-viewing season is extended and the transfer to the lodge is very quick. However there are a number of the lodges in this area. Nkwali lies just outside the park gates but they keep a boat and a vehicle stationed on the opposite bank, inside the park so that guests don't have to drive through the park gates in the morning. But please note there is no way that you feel you are in the middle of nowhere!" |
