A ‘Robinson Crusoe’ hideaway, Kipungani Explorer comprises 14 spacious palm and makuti thatch chalets along a 600-metre beachfront on the southwest tip of Lamu Island. Each has an ocean-facing veranda with cushioned chairs and daybeds, furniture handmade from local woods, en suite bathrooms with solar-heated freshwater showers and flush loos. At the main lodge, oversize driftwood furniture encourages complete relaxation and a rim-flow saltwater pool overlooks the beach. Activities include windsurfing, creek or deep-sea fishing, sailing aboard Kipungani’s Arab dhow, bird walks, day trips to Lamu Town or the ancient ruined forts of Manda Island, and visits to neighbouring Kipungani Village. From November to March, there is snorkelling and diving on the reefs off Kinyika Rock and Manda Toto.
