Peponi is a family-run hotel at Shela, a short complimentary boat ride from the narrow streets of Lamu Town on Lamu Island. The 24 rooms, both superior and standard, all have ocean views, overhead fans and nets and are traditionally furnished. In the bougainvillea-filled gardens there is a fresh water swimming pool, shaded by baobabs, which overlooks the dhows gliding past in the busy channel. The bar is popular with guests and locals alike while the terrace restaurant does a brisk trade in succulent seafood and delicious Swahili dishes. According to weather, water-skiing takes place in front of the hotel, boats ferry guests to the reef for snorkelling and diving and the area is excellent for big game fishing.
