Entabeni Game Reserve is a beautiful malaria-free reserve of 12,000ha in the Waterberg mountains, approx 2½ hours drive north of Johannesburg. Entabeni’s varied terrain supports a wide range of game including the Big Five. Spanning two escarpments with a dramatic 600metre ravine between and boasting five different eco-systems, Entabeni offers a magnificent bush experience. The uplands are open grasslands with wooded hillsides. The lower part of the reserve is bushveld and accessed by a very dramatic ravine. Activities at Entabeni Gasme Reserve include twice-daily game drives in open game 4x4 vehicles, guided nature walks, horse riding, moonlit boma dinners, picnic lunches and visits to the Pedi cultural village.
The exclusive Earthsong Lodge (10 suites) has a breathtaking setting with views across the wetlands to the Hanglip Mountain. All the suites are luxuriously furnished in African ‘Baroque’ style, with private sun decks offering breathtaking views across the wetlands and vast open plains, and a lounge area with romantic fireplace. The main reception area leads onto a courtyard, swimming pool and boma. For those who prefer a quiet time with a book there is a reading room in the loft and the wine connoisseur could visit the wine cellar for wine tasting.
Kingfisher Lodge is an intimate and luxurious lodge of only eight rooms set on the banks of the lake with spectacular mountains as a backdrop. Each room has a shower and bath, extra length beds, fan, fireplace, minibar and wooden deck overlooking Lake Entabeni. The honeymoon suite features an exquisite four-poster bed and Jacuzzi bath. The lodge has a spacious lounge/dining room, which opens onto a large wooden deck on the lake’s edge, ideal for enjoying the prolific bird life.
Lakeside Lodge (24 rooms) enjoys a similar stunning setting with lovely accommodation each with private decks. Children welcome with extra beds in the bedroom.
Eagle's Nest is an intimate wood and stone lodge built on stilts with spectacular bird's-eye views over the lake (4 rooms) A spacious, elegantly decorated private lounge with fireplace leads on to a unique rock-face boma and sun deck.
Ravineside Lodge (22 rooms), with its wooden lodges on stilts and sundecks, provides bird's-eye views and undeniable appeal. Each chalet has three or four bedrooms which share a sitting room and large sundeck. Thus it is ideal for friends travelling together or family parties. From here guests can enjoy bird-watching and experience the beauty of the ravine with the rippling sound of water far down in the valley.
Wildside Camp is a charmingly rustic tented camp nestling against majestic mountains and has a relaxed atmosphere and authentic safari feel. Stay close to nature in 18 en suite tents raised on wooden decks. The open lounge/bar area with the roaring fire in the boma creates the perfect end to a relaxed day in the bush. |

Petru and Mari stayed at Entabeni in July: "No more than 2½ hours drive from Johannesburg you come to the Malaria-Free, Big Five Entabeni Private Game Reserve in the beautiful Waterberg Area. We stayed at Lakeside Lodge with its 22 en-suite rooms and thought it to be a good choice for groups or families with children, but perhaps less so for couples. Just next to Lakeside and also overlooking Lake Entabeni is the 5 star Kingfisher Lodge which has only 8 deluxe rooms, one of which is the Honeymoon suite with a four poster bed and Jacuzzi bath. This would be our preferred choice.
Later that afternoon we set out on our afternoon game drive and were greeted by buffalo, various antelope and just before we returned to the camp we saw a family of elephants. They have separated the lions from the buffalo as they have a few of the last remaining decease-free buffalo and want to ensure that they breed properly. Just over the Gorge the lions are close to the other two camps, Wildside and Earthsong. We saw lions the next morning on our game drive. Earthsong, the new 5 star lodge, and Wildside, the tented camp, can be reached from the other side of the reserve (also a 2½ hour drive). We loved Earthsong with its 10 luxury rooms, each with a fireplace in the room and furnished in an African Baroque style. It has a main Manor House, a spa and a pool area with stunning views over lakes a vast open plain with a mountain behind it. Earthsong also allows children on request.
We had the privilege to go on a adrenaline pumping helicopter ride up and over the mountains and think that it is a ‘must’ for anyone visiting Entabeni (if their budget allows!) A good idea would be to pre-book your 6 or 12 minute helicopter flight in advance. There is a secluded spot on a high mountain peak only reachable by the helicopter where a surprise romantic dinner can be served and is the perfect setting for a wedding proposal.
As well as the game-viewing and helicopter rides, Entabeni offers horseriding safaris, walking and boat cruises on the Entabeni Lake.
Conclusion: Entabeni is a very good choice with lots to offer in a non-malaria environment quite close to Johannesburg. Ideal for families, as a second safari experience." |
