Accommodation in Zambia Home / Zambia / South Luangwa

Tafika | Zambia

[Zambia Hotels and Accommodation]
Tafika lies in the far northern part of the South Luangwa National Park and is owned and run by locals, John and Carol Coppinger. Tafika is one of the more rustic, and yet one of the most appealing, camps. Four reed and thatch chalets, each with two double beds, overlook the river in a remote area of the park. In addition there is a family chalet with a king size bed in one bedroom and two double beds in the other bedroom and a shared bathroom. There is also a hide overlooking a small waterhole. The camp is outside the park, but a mere 5 minute drive to get into the Nsefu sector on the one side and a canoe trip across the river to walk in the park on the opposite bank in front of camp. Walks and day and night drives can be ‘topped’ with an optional but exhilarating micro light flight over the valley (15 mins). The transfer from Mfuwe Airport is 2 hours and partly takes the form of a game drive through the Park and the Game Management Area. You can also choose to fly to Lukuzi airstrip (10 minute flight) which lies just 10 minutes drive from the camp. This is offered at an extra cost and can be taken one way or return.

Remote Africa Safaris (Tafika) currently run two walking camps in the South Luangwa National Park. Crocodile Camp and Chikoko Camp are the Walking Trails camps and are located in a scenic area in the northern sector of the South Luangwa National Park, containing an abundance of wildlife. Being a Wilderness Area, there are no roads and thus all game viewing is done on foot. The three day trails move between the two bush camps which offer simple, but comfortable, accommodation. Each camp has three reed and thatch chalets with ensuite bucket showers and flush loos. You usually stay for a couple of nights at Tafika before being transferred on foot from Tafika to the first camp. Your luggage is portered separately and is waiting for you on arrival.

Ginny stayed at Tafika:
"Tafika is owned by John Coppinger, another well-known name for guiding in the South Luangwa valley. It is the most rustic camp in construction as it is entirely made from local materials, even down to the beds supported on tree branches! The chalets are wattle walls under thatch with brick floors set in the earth. But, as is generally the case, this rustic environment is no lower in cost than a more ostensibly comfortable neighbour. The unique feature at Tafika is that it offers microlighting as well as walking and game drives. It also opens up during the wet season to offer special interest safaris for birders. This is a camp for the eco- and wildlife fundi who deplores the trend towards tarting up bush lodges!"
