Ulusaba Rock and Safari Lodge | South Africa

[South Africa Hotels and Accommodation]
Ulusaba Rock Lodge, Sir Richard Branson's private game lodge in the Sabi Sands Private Game Reserve, has a commanding position high on a rock koppie overlooking the bushveld below. Telescopes allow you to view the movements of game with surprising ease. The ten opulent rooms and suites are decorated in luxurious African style with handcrafted furnishings and each has a private wooden deck with panoramic views. The lodge is known for its flamboyant exciting décor coupled with unobtrusive service as well an exceptional range of facilities: a pool, the 'aroma boma', a fully equipped gym (with panoramic view) and even tennis courts. Children are very welcome with extra beds placed in the rooms and a two bedroom family suite.

Ulusaba Safari Lodge is situated in the famous Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve, a luxurious contemporary camp hidden in the bush under a canopy of trees and above a dry riverbed which is a magnet for animals. Here you can enjoy close encounters with game as you laze on your deck. Three atmospheric rooms and seven air-conditioned suites are built on elevated platforms and linked by traditional swing bridges. The main lodge has a soft contemporary feel with a large dining room and sitting room both with fireplaces and an open plan stylish bar overlooking the river and will appeal to the most discerning of tastes.

Mari stayed at Safari Lodge in July 2006:
"Our ranger at Ulusaba was excellent – an experienced guide with five years in the Sabi Sands on top of earlier guiding elsewhere. Our game drives were also good in quality with a lion kill of buffalo on the evening drive and lions mating on the following morning drive.
We stayed in the elephant suite which is the middle category. I wasn't sure that it was worth the premium over the Safari suites, especially in winter. The elephant suites were accessed via the rope bridges (which were great) but essentially the same in décor. The river suites were noticeably larger and more stylish with a more sophisticated décor.

Rock Lodge - We merely visited the lodge and so can comment on the lodge appearance. Rock Lodge was looking good in that glitzy over the top way. There is a high element of theatricality about Ulusaba Rock - some might find it all too much. Given I personally enjoy staying in places which are utterly unlike your home environment, I liked it.

I also enjoy the fact that you are above the bush. You can see a surprising amount of game from up there, and then you can use the telescopes on the deck to zoom in on an animal.

The standard cliff rooms were stylishly furnished and we particularly liked the duplex rooms with a spacious bathroom downstairs (though not good for frail people needing to go to the loo in the middle of the night).

The original Master suite was not worth the additional premium being no smarter in décor to the standard rooms, merely larger. However the Makwela Suite is clearly in a higher bracket and has a private plunge pool as well.

The two bedroom suite would suit families with smaller children. The master bedroom can take a twin or double but the second bedroom can only fit a double so children would need to either sleep in the double bed or parents would have to take the smaller bedroom.

The well-equipped gym is one of the highest rooms and has a stunning panoramic view of the bush. There’s also the aroma boma (but with very high prices). They are building a second two-bedroom suite which sounds like it will be larger, with its own small kitchen as well."
