The Plettenberg Hotel has one of the most idyllic settings in South Africa, on a rocky headland overlooking the rolling breakers of the Indian Ocean, Lookout Beach and Robberg Nature Reserve. Impeccable service, contemporary décor and gourmet cuisine at the Sand restaurant are the hallmarks of this classical hotel. Superbly furnished rooms and suites have a fresh modern décor and original South African art. Many have sea views and all offer underfloor heating, air-conditioning and minibar. From the glass enclosed Sand restaurant, terrace, garden and pool deck, you can enjoy sightings of dolphins and whales in the bay below. Beauty treatments available at the Carchele Spa. The luxurious two bedroom Beach House and Lookout Villa are ideal for families or friends. A private chef can be supplied if required. Rélais et Chateaux member. TGCSA 5 star hotel.

Kate visited in October: "The Plettenberg is on the way towards completing a transformation from a country house hotel in a beachside location to being a proper luxury beach hotel. This is mainly seen in the public areas – the foyer is light and fresh, the bar is now distinctly funky and modern and the restaurant has a glass atrium leading out onto the garden so that many diners can now have an Oceanside view (so you should definitely book a front table if you can). The garden and stunning rimflow pool haven’t changed, and nor have the rooms yet – still a little too formal and traditional for my taste given the beach setting. Try to book at least the luxury rooms (2nd room category up) and preferably the luxury sea facing rooms, if your budget allows."
