Phinda Game Reserve | South Africa

[South Africa Hotels and Accommodation]
Phinda Resource Reserve, which means 'the return', is situated to the north of Hluhluwe and the St Lucia wetlands, in the Maputaland region of KwaZulu Natal. Rich both in game and in stunning scenery, Phinda boats the diversity of seven contrasting ecosystems, including sand forest, mountain bushveld and wetlands. Phinda offers a winning combination of soft adventure, thrilling game-viewing and inspired lodge design. Guests can enjoy game drives, nature walks, birding, boat cruises, and canoeing. Wildlife attractions include lion, elephant, cheetah, leopard, rhino, hippo, an abundance of general game, and prolific bird life. Optional extras include coastal flights, and beach excursions and activities. Exhilarating specialist walking, leopard research, birding and rhino-darting safaris also available.

Six superb lodges and one bush lodge, using for walking safaris, offer sophisticated and luxurious accommodation.

Hand-built by local Zulu people to minimise its impact on the rare Sand Forest, PHINDA FOREST LODGE'S 16 stilted glass chalets float between the forest floor and towering torchwood trees. Within these unique habitats, no luxury has been overlooked, from beechwood and slate floors, and air-conditioning, to hand towels tied with lichen, enhancing the 'Zulu-Zen' feel. At Forest Lodge, the walls have become windows opening up to the canopy beyond. Outside, the forest is alive with creatures, from the tiny red duiker and suni antelope to the narina trogon and rare red squirrel. Your private glass chalet beckons the forest within. The dining, lounge, viewing deck and shaded pool areas of this intimate and secluded camp overlook a grassy vlei. There is also a forest "boma" (reeded enclosure), where memorable evenings are spent dining under the stars.

PHINDA MOUNTAIN LODGE is a sophisticated harmony of avant garde and ethnic décor, superb cuisine, and personal service. A reception area and sophisticated curio shop welcome guests to the lodge. Each of the 20 spacious split-level suites with private lounge and en suite bathroom, opens onto a private deck overlooking the reserve. Paved pathways lead down the mountainside from the main lodge to the chalets. The guest dining area, lounge, shaded terrace and bar lead out to cool verandas with spectacular views of the Ubombo Mountains and bushveld beyond. In the evenings, the sweep of the horizon is burnished with the sinking sun, flooding the lodge with golden light. Additional facilities include a dramatic open air "boma" (reeded enclosure); shaded swimming pool and lookout deck for relaxation; and bird and game watching.

PHINDA ROCK LODGE offers sweeping views across Maputaland's coastal plain. Rock lodge has a strong Mexican pueblo influence which in fact works very well. It has an open, relaxed and understated feel to it, which exudes cosmopolitan style whilst simultaneously staying very much in tune with the bush. Each of the 6 chalets is huge with a small indoor sitting area, a bedroom with glorious open views of the bushveld below and the Lebombo mountains, a spacious bathroom with sunken bath, again with stunning view, indoor shower and one of the nicest outdoor showers. Each has its own private plunge pool.

Together with Rock Lodge (and the exclusive use Getty House), PHINDA VLEI LODGE is the most luxurious lodge and is suitable synbaritic in feel. It retains the slight Japanese feel to the décor with much use of wooden shutters and light open spaces. The suites have a separate sitting room, a large bedroom with glass walls overlooking a private deck with plunge pool and views to the vlei. The bathroom is delicious with double shower, large bath and vanity unit.

Meaning sixpence in Zulu, PHINDA ZUKA LODGE offers guests a new experience of Phinda's pristine wilderness. The Lodge's four intimate thatched cottages are set 15 metres (50 feet) apart with verandas overlooking a busy waterhole where a diversity of wildlife is regularly seen. The bedrooms are stylishly decorated in a contemporary African style and have a built-in sofa which can accommodate a young child under six. Each has air-conditioning, fans and a decadent bathroom with circular stone bath, double showers, separate toilet and twin hand basins. The lodge has a friendly ambience with a large sitting/dining room, an intimate library with internet access and a café-style open kitchen. Outside there’s an extended deck for dining and a swimming pool.

PHINDA GETTY HOUSE is an opulent, glamourous villa perched on the hillside in the exclusive western region of the reserve. The four spacious suites accommodate eight guests and feature sliding panel windows framing the stunning views. En suite bathrooms have bath, indoor and outdoor showers, double vanity and separate toilet. An interactive kitchen allows for intimate and informal dining, and the spacious sitting room, expansive deck and rimflow infinity pool offers a variety relaxing options during the heat of the day.

Finally BUSH CAMP is the rustic yet comfortable base for Phinda's walking safaris. 4 en suite tents have hot bucket showers and proper beds. Why not add a couple of nights at the bush camp after some time on safari at one of the main lodges?
