Phantom Forest is a magical hillside hideaway where birdsong and the sounds of the forest are all that you hear in the surrounding nature reserve. The 14 luxurious ethnic tree suites, in three differing styles, are set under the forest canopy with enchanting views over Knysna lagoon below. Each comprises a sitting room and bedroom both decorated with African textiles, artworks and hand-woven carpets as well as minibar, ceiling fan, private veranda and stunning forest bathroom. Meandering boardwalks lead to special places such as the 'natural' freshwater swimming pool or the 'Body Boma' for a range of natural treatments - stone therapy, massage, vichy shower, reiki as well as the secluded wine vat Jacuzzi,sauna.and small gym. The lodge also offers boating on the river, mountain bikes and an indigenous nature trail through the reserve, home to 150 bird species, bushbuck and the rare blue duiker. The lodge has two swimming pools and two restaurants - the original restaurant offering sumptuous five course feasts, and the new Chutzpah dining experience serving North African cuisine.

Kate visited in July: "Phantom has really developed beautifully over the last few years. There are three room (and price) categories to choose from: The standard suites have an indoor bath with a view but no shower and a small deck. The décor is subtle and stylish and I liked these rooms. The Middle suites have a large indoor shower with glass walls onto the forest. Outside there’s a large deck with a sunken outdoor bath which would appeal to all romantics and adventurous souls. The Moroccan suites are on the upper level. These are the smartest with both an indoor bath with a view and double shower as well as a large patio area with minibar.
As well as the stunning setting, the other new drawcard at Phantom is the choice of two pools and two totally different dining experiences – the original fine dining restaurant and the new marrakesh dining experience.
The lodge will ferry you from the top of the lodge to the bottom but it would be better if people are comfortable negotiating boardwalks, slopes and stair if they stay at Phantom as then they can go where they want when they want."
